X-Post, new ice skates and revised goal weight

Not long after I started this journey, there was a post about rewarding ourselves for goals that were not food related. I decided I wanted new ice skates when I got to goal. Well I started adult lessons in December, and it was evident that my 23 year old skates were just worn out. So, being close to goal, DH and I discussed new skates for Christmas. They needed to be ordered for me, and I picked them up Saturday. What a difference. They still need some break in time, but after skating in them just twice, all I can say is wow. Now, time to relearn much of what had been forgotten over the years, and to do what I couldn't do because of the weight.

I have also revised my goal weight up a little bit. When I first decided on a goal, it was based on a guess of what I would need to weigh to fit into a particular item that has been in my closet for many, many years. The real goal has always been based on that item. So, I tried on my old skating dress a few days ago, and I am almost there. I think just a few more pounds and it will happen. I also like the way I look and feel. I don't want to get too skinny and end up looking unhealthy. I may revise the goal again at some point, but for now, I'll go with my adjustment.

I will, I just need to get used to them. They are so sharp that I had a hard time stopping with a snowplow. I probably would have smacked the ice it I had tried a T stop.

Believe it or not, they make me feel like a beginner. The quality is so good that the body balance is different. But I will press on, plan to be able to land a single on my 1 year surgiversary.

LInda, I've got little tears in my eyes as I read your post!

I am thrilled for you, my skating sister!!

What brand are your skates?...sounds like you went for custom-fitted ones? The cadillac choice of skates! What a wonderful gift!

...and, what a wonderful, supportive husband you have!

Congratulations on all of it! Enjoy, enjoy! I think that really delving into a physical activity that you enjoy -- and ice skating is a real challenging one! -- is key to maintenance...and a bonus is that it adds pleasure and zest to your life, which for me is one of the most important purpose of surgery.

By the way, i have been losing a bit of weight as I prepare for surgery, and my XXLs are just too big...I am starting to get to know my local secondhand clothing shops. Fun! Yesterday I discovered that, on Tuesdays, one of them offers a 20% discount to those of us over the age of 55 -- my 55th is next month, but my very kind cash register person gave me the discount anyway...woo-hoo! The beginnings of a new wardrobe AND a few extra shekels in my pocket! What could be better! I always think of you when I go shopping now -- you are there with me in spirit, having fun!

I send you hugs, Linda!

I love the new skates, they weren't "custom" ones, but the skating coach at the rink is a skate dealer too. She traced my foot and did a measurement so she could order them for me. They are Jackson Competitors. If I can progress enough, I might get the custom ones, but they are quite expensive. At my age, we'll have to see what the future holds.

I totally agree, I have a wonderful husband.

You will find that thrift stores will be your friend as you drop pounds and sizes, enjoy the ride, it is a great one.

How exciting!  Both of my girls teach skating now and can't believe that I ever could skate too.  That's one of my goals - to get back on the ice.  I was never very good, but always really enjoyed it.
