You know..I put this on here so people can get ideas of what to do with protein shakes. It was NOT meant to be critiqued, or to have MY plan questioned. If you like it great, if you can make it work with your plan, great! If not...then you move on. I am surprised by all the negativity that comes along sometimes. I hope we aren't scaring off newbies. So....here is the recipe:

I found this recipe for a PB&J protein shake. Yes...it is high in carbs and high in calories for some. I am 7 months out and I am using this as my pre workout shake today.....not every day. It also depends what kind of workout I am doing. (Strength training today..yeah baby!!)

So if you are interested...here it is

Pb2 - Powdered Peanut Butter, 1 tbsp
Cottage Cheese - Daisy, Low Fat, 2%, 1/2 cup
Six Star - Pro Nutrition - Whey Protein Elite Series Vanilla Cream, 1 level scoop
Trader Joe's - Coconut Milk Beverage, Vanilla, 1/2 cup;
Strawberries - Raw, 0.25 cup, halves (I used 1 1/2 frozen strawberry)
1/2 C water;
Calories 330 Carbs 23 Protein 48

Hmm.. That sounds pretty good. It's more calories than I can afford to eat at one time, but I bet I could play with it a bit and make myself a 1/2 serving. Or - make the whole thing and split it with my hubby as our evening snack tonight. Thanks for the idea!

It looks like more of a post-workout recovery shake with that kind of protein.

Do you blend this? IM wondering wht the consistency is like with the cottage cheese? Ive never put cottage cheese in a shake - sounds like an interesting idea and way to get more protein if it doesnt give it a really weird texture.

Post workout...got it!! (Still trying to figure that all out).
I was hesitant when I read "cottage cheese". I do blend it. The cottage cheese makes it thick. And then when you add ice (I was out of ice) it makes it just like a thick old fashion shake!!!
Allison...what would be better pre workout???

Depends on what kind of workout you are doing - but if you are going to be doing a strenuous/long (or longer than an hour) workout, Id say primarily carbs about 1-2 hours before (piece of fruit (apple w/ PB is good or banana), or i prefer to take 1/2 cup of fruit and make a shake out of it). The goal is to make sure you have enough energy to keep you going. We generally store enough for a moderate, 60 min workout.

Post workout recovery is the most important - that's where all the real work happens so you should drink your protein shake within 30 min or so (small amount of carbs to go with it is a good idea - aids in the absorption of the protein)

Thank you so much!!! I appreciate it. Most of my workouts are 60-90 minutes. Today is an "off" day, long, but not strenuous. Yoga/pilates class, lite cardio.

Sounds good. Wonder what the stats are minus the cottage cheese. I was under the impression your body cannot absorb more than 30 grams of protein at a time. Unless you are splitting this shake up.

Btw don't think the "carb nazi" term is the polite way of referring to the low carb ppl on here. Everyones diets are different.

I would like to know if you meant to be offensive or if you were just using a term you had heard used before?

Nope...not being offensive. Just using the "term" that is most often used here.

OK, that's why I try not to jump at being offended first, but ask to see what the intent might be behind the remark.  Of course, being Jewish, and being called a Nazi pushes my buttons.  It helps me to know the context.
