I went to my nutrition class today and my NUT said to read all labels and eat nothing more than 2g of sugar per serving. My book she gave me also says 2g. The reason I am asking this question is because I went to the in store in the hospital that sold the protein shakes and got 3 huge tubes of matrix shakes all with 3g of sugar! She told me to buy my shakes at their store and I don't understand why they would sell them if they weren't in their guidelines. I did not think to read the labels at their store its the barix clinics store right in the hospital! I a getting vgs but te rny patients were also told 2 g of sugar. Not sure what to do, return them or are they ok?

That is probably a good rule of thumb, but it depends on how much of the total carb count it is. If there are 8 grams of carbs and 3 is sugar, compared to there being 4grams of carbs and 3 of it is sugar, it means the sugar makes up more of the total carb consumption. Ideally in the 8/3 scenario the other 5 are from fiber, then I would say go for it. But it were 2 grams of sugar and 2 grams of carbs I would have to consider what it is, something natural yes, something packaged no, it could mean added sugar or corn syrup or something like that.

Thanks for the info. Syntrax matrix shakes have 6 carbs 3 sugar. And sugar is one of the ingredients. I just don't understand why they would sell them at a bariatric hospital if we can't have them.

You might want to go with the Syntrax Nectar rather than the Syntrax Matrix.  They are more bariatric friendly.

I got samples of those also, I just never thought to read labels at the hospital store. I just assumed they were all ok.

I would probably take the shakes back. Go to your local Vitamin Shoppe or online. They have a huge selection and you will definitely find something that fits your Nutritionists guidelines. My experience with protein shakes is that you will have to compromise a bit on them because you need to balance your plan with how they taste because for 1 your tastes will change dramatically over the next couple of weeks and you will get sick of whatever you buy.

So the next rule of thumb is never buy 3 containers of protein powder because they are expensive and you will get sick of them. I have 3 containers in my cupboard now that I will at some point have to force myself through. I was on a banana flavor kick when I bought a 5lbs container of it. That one is going to be rough. I made a committment to myself not to buy any more until I finish up everything that I have in the cupboard and I have some nasty looking samples to power through. Not sure how I am going to do the chocolate flavored pea protein.

I only bought these because they were recommened by other people on OH. Banana and choc. Pea nutrient sound strange! I bought cookies and cream and choc. Mint and never thought to read the labels until I got home! Its a 3 hr drive back to the hospital store! Maybe they will return them the day of my surgery. I am going to call my nut and inform her about the sugar. Thanks!

I used the mint matrix and list 28 pounds in 28 days... I count carbs and try To with 20 a day, so even 2 shakes a day at 12 carbs worked for me. I filled in with protein chicken brith and protein hot chocate at first...I have recently been enjoying syntax nectar latte cappichino which has no carbs and 100 Cal, no fat. You also have to find something you can tolerate/ not mind and for me the Mint matrix and cookies and creme worked. I'd recommend buying one like the syntax nectar cappichino or gnc amplified whelbolic 60 in chocolate ( 95 cals, 3 carbs, 23 protein) and try to switch off . Between the higher carb cal one and lower one to keep daily stats good. I wouldn't drive 3 hours to return them! You'll use them!

I'm of the mind you have to find one you like or you won't drink it at all!

Good luck!!

Ps I must've tried 20 others I gagged on, sorry but taste is important to me when im living on the stuff and I cannot eat or drink anything that I hate! I just won't do it and I don't think it's necessary. There are many that we're recommended that made me gag, I have a very very strong sense of smell and it gets in my way!
When my wt loss has stalled it has not been from my protein drink, it's been from lack of water and this last week from too many calories and carbs and bumping out of ketosis'

Honestly, I see nothing wrong with what you have. 6 total carbs isn't that bad. I did do research early out and went with a far lower carb protein powder though. I was focused more on total carbs, not just sugar carbs.

My protein powder has 2.3 total carbs per scoop and less than a gram of sugar per scoop. It's called GNC Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60. It's my go to protein and I always have it in the house.

If you are early out, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You aren't going to get a lot of carbs in your day anyway. When you run out of what you bought, just look for a lower total carb protein powder.

I love mine and recommend it highly.

Thanks I'll have to try that. I've been to gnc many times and could not figure out which one to buy, way to many choices. I got jay robb and that was low sugar and very good but expensive and they never got anymore in stock.
