What kind of fiber supplements do you prefer?

My Doc said it's ok to take fiber supplements, either wafer or something that dissolves in water, to avoid constipation.  He mentioned metamucil and benefiber and I believe another.  If you are taking one, which one do you take or whch one gives you the best "movement?"

Thanks,

Lynn

Oh boy!  I love talking about fiber :)

Fiber is important, since we aren't eating a lot of carbs and ruffage, but still want regular bowels and want to keep our risk of colon cancer low (regular fiber reduces your chance of colon cancer!)

I still make sure I get at least 2 liters of water a day.  In some of tha****er, I put in two heaping scoops of Benefiber.  You can't taste it at all.  Except I'm a cheap ******* so I get Target's Up & Up brand version (it's wheat or corn dextran).

Then I pop a few pills throughout the day:

Two pills of FiberCon - again, the Target Up & Up brand (this is calcium polycarbophil).

One pill of Citrucel (this is methylcellulose)

Two pills of Metamucil capsules - cheap ******* again, I use Costco's Kirkland brand (these are psyllium husk).

That's what I do... hope it helps!

Thanks, Ruggie.   Yes, regularity is what I'm aiming for.  I'm 18 days out and have had to take MOM which I don't care for but since I'm still healing, I fear any kind of straining to "move things".  I had my follow up with Dr. C today and he recommended I not use MOM and mentioned a few different ones.

Gender and age should play a role in the amount of your supplementation. I should be around 25g of fiber. I wish meat had fiber.

Also, go slowly and work up to amounts you can tolerate.

I use the clear benefiber and citrucel. I don't know that I would give up the 16g of carbs for the wafers unless they were extraordinary, or maybe just use occasionally.

There are also sugar-free on the go packets which I've found helpful to have with me in case I am out and about.

Hi Lynn, My doctor recommended this all natural senna tea called smooth moves. I saw it at Vons today. I haven't tried it because I have been going pretty regular but I got some just in case. Hope things get moving for ya : )

So are you saying your doctor okayed benefiber this early out?  I wasn't sure if we were allowed yet.  I could really use it cause I'm having a lot of constipation too.

I have something called Total Fiber.  I think it's the generic for benefiber but not 100% sure it's the same.

I love the MOM debate.  I just got my orders in writing yesterday, I'm to take MOM if needed on day 5.
