Safe to go to Disney?
We are going on a family vacation to disneyworld on Feb 6th-11th. If i have my surgery Dec. 28, so about 5 1/2 weeks before, do you think i'll be ok to get on rides, and have energy to run around with my kids? I dont want to be selfish, so if im going to slow my family down in any way, i would rather just wait until after we get back to do the surgery.
Ohh, how fun!! I'm about that far out, and I've gone to Disneyland (passholder) three times since my surgery. Looking at my calendar, the first time being three and a half weeks after the surgery. So assuming you're healing fine, I think you'll be fine for the rides. I only stay about five or six hours, so I'm not sure about the running around with the kids part. I'm going tomorrow with day trippers, so that will be the test of a really long day, and I'll let you know how I do.
I would think you should be fine. As for how fast you can move and what you can tolerate judge it by how you are right now. You will be able to move at least that much and hopefully more. Start taking walks now so you get really built up before surgery that way you should be able to be back at it about a week after surgery. Some people can handle it sooner.
Good luck,\

Go and have a blast! We went about 8 weeks after my surgery and I had a blast. I was lighter and had more energy to walk around all day. Heres a tip though, bring yourself a bag of snacks because food is expensive (especially when you are full after a few bites) and it was a little hard to find something I could work with as far as staying on track goes. At one place in the Magic Kingdom my daughter ordered grilled chicken nuggets from the kids menu and just shared them with me but at 5 1/2 weeks I don't know if you will be eating that just yet. Also make sure you bring protein shakes with you for breakfast and so on. They will help with energy and fullness. You will love it! I don't think anything in the world would have convinced me to put off the surgery for any length of time :)
Each person is so different. By that time I'd say go for it. Just make sure you have plenty of water as we easily dehydrate after surgery and you have protein snacks because it's easy (for me anyway) to lose track of my eating when I'm out and about and you can bottom out pretty quickly when having fun.

I'm three weeks out now, and I had an easy time with surgery, liquids, etc. -- so for me, the trip would be a no brainer. You didn't say how old your kids are, so that, combined with how you manage post-op, could make a difference. I think it should be fine, but you probably will tire a little easier -- but if you have little kids who need a nap, you'll need one too. If you have bigger kids, well, they should be fine if you need to go back a rest a little!
Also, are you staying on the property so you can easily get back to your hotel if you get tired? I'm a big planner, so I'd approach it by planning a tentative itinerary for each day, along with a "worst-case" plan for yourself every day -- what points could you leave if you felt tired? Or are there "shows" you can plan to attend if you'll be walking a long way to break up the walking. Do you need to take one of those cane/chairs, so you can just sit down in line if you get tired?
But what a great way to get in plenty of walking!
