HMMMM Whole Wheat/Grains...
In my rediscover of MYSELF and MY demons (I love Alison). I realized that I need to make old favorites into new favorites. So long story short I follow this blog http://mariahealth.blogspot.com/ she is just AMAZING!!! She is responsible for "helping" me stop my regain. She is also responsible for REMINDING me that like Frisco and Elina (I LOVE them too) are showing us we must find ways to REPLACE our old "bad" favorites for "new" good favorites. So my cabinets flour stock is Almond and Coconut.
SOOOOOO this video from Dr. Oz (a 3 parter) NOW explains why when I eat oatmeal and whole grain wheat bread I feel like I'm about to EAT everything in site...check it out and open your eyes. Side note the part about the ladies and the blood sugar HIKE after wheat bread vs after a candy bar. Just other 2 ladies that didn't have a spike...I wonder did their levels stay the same??? A sad/scary/bummer thing I learned when just out of curiosity I started testing my blood sugars was that protein isolate doubled my blood sugars. No carbs, no sugars in the protein, just isolate. DOUBLED. Like I ate a hand full of Twizzlers, without the joy of picking red goo out from between my teeth.
Its been eye opening to see how my blood sugars (which always fall within normal limits on my annuals - and I NEVER had any symptoms of blood sugar issues, even after getting down on a can of Eagle Brand Milk - mmmm) are jacked around by foods that are deemed "appropriate" and even low carb.

If i care for anything "sweetish" I have coconut manna (creamed coconut no sugar added) that I have put into candy molds and an ounce of it is way more than enough. Its amusing how that works, when my body isnt sent spinning and jonesing with artificial hunger.

any whole grains do this to me as well. in addition,I want to eat all day when I eat any of it.
Secondly, I read a blog about the effect of grains, WWW.wheatbellyblog.com that had a recent entry about dairy and weight loss. even fresh dairy products. I have struggled for 16 months to get back on the losing train and COULD not do anything but maintain. I stopped all dairy products and in 2 weeks lost 6#. I am almost back to the weight I was when this huge plateau started(yeah,i gained 12# in there somewhere) and the only change is no dairy. If I eat dairy ,I will be up a # the next day. avoid it and in a couple days back down again. I am trying to avoid dairy like a plague.
I like his analogy about filtered cigarettes being "healthier" then non-filter but the long term effects are still just as bad.
There are just many of us who need to SEE people say these things for it to register. Right around the time of my regain when I got tired of dieting and tired of being hungry. I was actually eating a 1/2 cup of steal cut oatmeal (added - along with 2-4oz protein). It dawned on me after awhile that it was THAT triggering my hunger for other stuff which is exactly when this doctor is talking about.
While whole wheat MIGHT be better...NO wheat is BEST for many.

And then there is the whole glycemic index effect, where if you combine high GI foods with low GI foods they tend to average out. Bread, even a relatively complex carb type like whole grain wheat bread by itself can stimulate hunger fairly quickly (hence the reason that restaurants often hit you with the bread basked as soon as you sit down....) but when combined with meat and cheese in a sandwich stretches out that spike.
