Protein smoothie mixed with green smoothies?
I'm still preop.
Does anyone do this?
I'm think of buying a nutri-bullet or a vitamix (expensive but seems awesome) I was thinking if would be easier post op to get some greens in that way. I'm a little concerned about carbs and dumping early out but I think it's important to get your greens.
Would it work well to add fibery greens into a protein shakes as early post op as the pureed stage with out a concern of dumping from the fiber or carbs? Any thoughts or feedback from experience?
I was thinking something like this.
8 oz water
1 sccoop unflavored protein mix
1/2 apple
handful of spinach and Kale
Or
8oz water
1 scoop unflavored protein mix
1/2 cup carrots
handful of spinach and kale
(obviously a new post op might take the entire day to drink it. lol )

The Vitamix is awesome....I bought it pre-op and continue to use it frequently.
I have never dumped on carbs or anything, and many don't dump with the VSG, so I don't think it is a big concern.
I added a few spinach leaves, and a few raspberries or pieces of frozen mango to my protein shakes from right away.
However, your amounts sound too large....I still use only about 4 oz of water, 2 scoops of protein powder, few pieces of spinach, handful of berries or few pieces of mango & some ice cubes....even doing this the shake expands to over 1 cup of protein shake, I never seem to make it the exact same way....so sometimes it is like 2 cups....then I can't drink it in one sitting...
The goal is to make it as small volume, so that you can get as much protein in one sitting as possible eventually...you are right in the beginning...it took me all day to finish one shake.
I also bought some concentrated fruit powder, some veggie powder, some hemp protein (for extra protein and omegas), and a B-complex powder....I also add these everytime....which gives me the equivalent of a lot of fruits and veggies....a lot of vitamin C, and other vits and minerals.
Nearly every-other day I do a green protein smoothie. I do spinach, some ground flax seed, unsweetened almond milk, and vanilla protein powder. This is my favorite shake! Sometimes I will add kale, but it does make it somewhat bitter tasting. I would skip the apple if I were you, I think the flavor would get a bit lost and it wouldn't be worth the extra carbs. Just a thought :)
Do you think it's okay to do the green smoothie very early out. I think there's something about nut having seeds, & berries for sometime. But I don't know how long. My nutrition's plan in the book has you straining everything in the puree stage. Even already purreed things. Is it that we can't handle fiber too well right away? I'm trying to figure out the thinking. Cause I'd rather have the fiber if I'm allowed it's healthier.

I'm still pre-op, and have struggled a lot with the idea of just getting protein in. Having greens just makes me feel SO much better! So I do have a Vitamix (most expensive, and SO worth it), but also purchased a juicer. I plan to juice my greens, like spinach, kale, celery etc., and use that green juice as part of my liquids.
I know many won't agree with me, but I think the green stuff is more important than even protein. The green juice will also give you plenty of iron, which is better than a supplement pill. I imagine it will also do wonders for recovery and hair loss. I say that, because I lost a ton of hair a few years ago when I went to a high-protein, low-carb diet.
Good luck!
I tend to agree with you in balance. Meaning I think protein is very important but I think vegatables are very important too. I really don't know why these doctors dont' stress that more. So do you intend to add protein to your greens or are you doing completely veggies.

Thanks for the response!
I struggled a lot with the mostly protein diet that is required of us post-op. But I intend to follow the doctor's orders exactly as he wishes. I will get my protein in during meals, and then do the green juice thing in between, as part of my water intake. In a perfect world, I would like to reach my goal and then rethink the diet to focus more on plants and plant-based proteins. I will surely miss my green smoothies (banana, spinach, mango), but my new little tummy won't be able to take the entire smoothie PLUS protein. Maybe I'll re-introduce the smoothie once I reach my goal.
All this research I've done to prepare for this might have worked against me. :) I found that there is a huge raw vegan community. These people are all fit and healthy and only get protein from nuts and greens. It's something to consider. I failed at being a raw vegan (not easy), but admire them. After seeing Forks Over Knives (documentary, via Netflix), I began questioning this whole high protein thing. However I want to repeat what I mentioned earlier, I will follow my doctor's orders. And I'll try to only use fruits and veggies as carbs. And if I have to juice them to get them in, that's what I'll do at first.
Hoping for surgery by the end of the year, but still waiting for that approval call from insurance. :)
