Told the Kid I was Having Surgery and our Turkey Day visit depended on how it turned out.

Thanks to all of you who provided some advise last week when I asked about traveling over Thanksgiving to visit our son -- a 10-hour drive.  I had planned to not tell him I'd had surgery, so the visit wasn't focused on "me", but after reading your comments and pondering it, I agreed that wasn't such a hot idea.  So I told him this evening that we had reservations, and hoped to come -- but that if I wasn't feeling up to it, we might cancel at the last minute.  Just depended on how things go.

Man, I love that kid (LOL, he's 25!).  He just said OK, asked if the surgery would help my stomach problems (reflux) and if I'd just be drinking Ensure (he had a broken jaw a couple of years ago, so he's familiar with liquid diets).

Since my sister had RNY last year, he's familar with WLS, so we talked about how my surgery is different.  Since they have a venison roast, we talked about cooking that -- so my Turkey Day meal might well be Bambi Broth!  Hmm -- I think I'll pack lots of extra shakes!

So, here's the plan:

1. Doctor's visit on Monday -- will get drain removed (if I still have it, not sure!) and ask him if I'm OK to travel by car, as long as we take frequent breaks, etc. (and I'll wear my compression socks!).

2. Kid knows we might cancel at the last minute and that I'll be low energy -- but he and his dad can do hikes, etc.

3. Reservations are fully refundable.

4. Hotel has a minifridge and microwave -- and I'll take my little blender and a load of supplies -- I'll be moving to full liquids during the trip.

And I'm mentally prepared to cancel the trip, if needed.  So, here's hoping for the best (and planning for the worst -- my motto!).

Sounds like you have a good plan in place.  You got your attitude right.  Hopefully you will get some Bambi broth, well at least to see your sonkiss

Great plan.  I'm glad you talked to your son about it.  I hope everything works out well!

MuttLover,

Sounds like you not only have a great, detailed plan, but you have garnered additional support for your surgery! Sounds like a win overall for everyone!

...and, yes, it sounds like you have a wonderful son....

You came up with a great solution; also, your situation shows the great online power of OH, with all of the thoughtful suggestions you got with your original post. AND you were wiling to consider what your OH friends were saying.

I would say that you are extremely well-positioned for success with your sleeve.

Have a Happy Bambi, and enjoy your child, whether you get to see him in person this Thanksgiving or not.
