how did you choose?

what made you choose the sleeve over the other choices? Pros, cons?

Im going to choose the sleeve (unless for some reason my dr convinces me otherwise) because i dont like the idea of re-routing my bowels in the gastric bypass, and the lap band just wont help me lose the amount of weight i need to in the near future (yes i know that eventually it evens out) plus i dont like the idea of having to go back and get it filled.

There was a good post about this at the end of last week - if you go back through all the threads, or search for it, you'll find a lot of great answers.

Why I didn't chose RNY - didn't like the idea of re-routing, didn't want a "ghost stomach" that is there and can have problems but that can't be scoped, didn't want to have dumping, didn't want the malabsorbtion.  I wanted to be able to take any meds I might need in the future.

Why I didn't chose the band - didn't want  a piece of plastic in me, didn't want my stomach to slip up through it that would require surgery, didn't want my stomach to erode threw and require more surgery, didn't want the fills/unfills trying to find that ever ellusive sweet spot.

Why I picked the sleeve - it permanently give you the restriction to have better portion control, it usually doesn't cause dumping, I can still take NSAIDS without an issue.  I like that the weight loss is pretty even with RNY patients.  I like that I can eat pretty much anything - just a lot less of it.

Same as Lucy posted above. I just felt way more comfortable with the sleeve. Just do lots of research and make an educated decision on what you feel is best for you. Good luck!

I am 11 days post op and feel great!!

There is much, much more wrong with the band than I not being able to lose enough.  How many problems can the band cause, let me count the way.  Slips,  erosions,  throwing up, getting stuck and scare tissue trying to wall the band off from your stomach.  Than there is the port, from several months out until the day They took it out nothing put different levels of pain as my body enveloped it with scare tissue trying to expel it.

The band did help me with portion control.  But, it never helped with hunger.  I was in two states for over three years.  I was hungry or I was hungry in pain.

I believe for me at least, the sleeve is the best choice.  It will control portion and reduce hunger hormones.  I don't want malabsorption and I do want to take meds.

Good Luck and don't let them talk you into something you might regret.

Lapband was a non-starter as they are massively over-promoted, don't offer adequate weight loss prospects (40-50% EWL averages) and high rate of complications.

RNY offers similar performance to the sleeve but at a higher cost in lifestyle and medical treatment limitations. so that was a no-go. Lots of threads here on the RNY vs. VSG comparison.

The DS is a more powerful procedure than the VSG that does offer better weight loss prospects and better regain resistance in exchange for the greater supplementation discipline it requires, but we decided that I didn't need the added horsepower that it offers. It was the only other procedure worthy of serious consideration.

The VSG provides the volumetric restriction that I need to complement the healthy dietary changes that I had already established to lose the remaining weight that I needed to lose. It has no particular dietary requirements leaving one to pursue whatever dietary regimen they and their doctors deem appropriate; long term supplemention requirements are minimal and are largely determined by individual dietary choices and metabolic variations (vitamin B12 is the only nutrient that the VSG significantly impedes in processing.)

I met a woman four years ago that had it done.  She was and is successful.  At this point I leaned heavily on VSG as my choice.

When it came to a seminar with a local surgeon and a little additional research I discovered that the band can and does slip.  You have a foreign object in your abdomen ... no thank you.  Band is not an option and after looking through this forum there are many cases showing that people are revising from band to sleeve ... enough said.

As for the gastric bypass, the idea of dumping syndrome so discouraged me that it wasn't really an option either.  Not to mention there is a lot going on with that surgery.  You are not only restricting your food intake but you have the mal-absorptive property as well.  If you aren't real careful on keeping up with supplements like vitamins, minerals, and calcium then you can get real sick real quick.  Forget that.

There really is only one choice.  Glad I made it.  Lost a lot of weight in a short period of time and having little issue with this process.  I would gladly do this all over again.
