Top -Down weight loss...when does the bottom catch up?

So most of my weight and inches lost have been reflected mostly in my upper body so far. I noticed that most WLS patients have this same experience. To me, it makes me look dismorphic (is that a word??), and it won’t’ be until I really start dropping in my bottom that it will really become noticeable. I have started losing around my waist considerably. But I have a “muffin top" that I have to work on, that’s in the way of real progress. To those of you who experienced this type of “uneven" weight loss, when did you start noticing your bottom starting catching up with your top?  I know everyone is different…not asking for hard and fast rules.  Just want to see what others experiences are.   Thanks!

Pre-op here. No answers but I did want to jump in. I know what you mean. I've seen a few strangers walking around and I've thought to myself "WLS" instinctively. The ones I react to are pear shaped women who seem to melt from the top down. I suspect a lot of that has to do with how they carried their weight pre-op, and perhaps they also need to change up their exercise to build muscle where they've lost so much fat.

I for one would be THRILLED if this happened to me, only because I am so apple-shaped - thick waisted, small hipped compared to my large bustline. But I suspect like in all diets past, my butt will get up and leave long before my boobs or belly choose to say adios. We'll see.

I'm looking forward to hearing what others have to say.

That is sooooooooooo me! Call me "Ms D'Anjou Bartlett"! LOL ...it doesn't help that I had a breast reduction 6 years ago and so I don't even have boobs to stuff into a bra to help even it out (who wouldve thunk THAT would be my problem, lol). Anyway, it's all good.

I never thought about what the "apple bottoms" go through...so it will be intersting to hear from you how your body responds post-op.

I'm 6 months out now and just now noticing SERIOUS changes in my stomach.  As in two weeks ago I could still wear a 26 w/ out them completely falling down.  Last night I got into a 20w.  It def is a little small BUT I could button w/ out feeling like I was dying.

Going from a 26 to a 20 is awesome in 6 months! I started as a 26/28 ...and 2 months out, im now a comfortable 24 in dress pants. Now jeans is another story, lol!! Still in the 26 there. But it will come together eventually. Good luck to you!

Hi Egi

I'm losing from the top down, too.  I've lost about 6" from waist and 6" from hips, but a lot of my loss has been up top -- my back is even feeling thinner -- weird.  And my tush is somewhat flatter, but tummy is still out of proportion to the rest of me.  I did notice that my legs are smaller, too.

Did you take your measurements from the start of your journey?  I did, and it has helped a lot for those stalls -- also helps because I'm a very slow loser, but I do see inches dropping.  I measure once a month -- will do it again on 10/27 -- hoping for more inches gone because the pounds aren't dropping the way it seems they should.

Good luck with your journey...........

Hi REE!!!!

Yes I measured as well before and after. Definite difference up top and not much on the bottom....yet...a few inches below here and there. But hey I'll take it..better than no loss at all right??

For me, I noticed that everything started evening out in about the month or two before reaching goal.  The body just decides for each of us where its going to grab fat from.

I carried a lot of weight in my thighs and legs.  I lost there first, then my stomach, then more in my thighs.

In the end it will all even out.  When you reach goal, your body will spend about the next year rearranging the fat you have left and re-contouring itself.  Many people (and I can attest to this as I have some serious crypt-keeper days myself) report looking ver haggard in the face for about the first 6 months after reaching goal until this process replenishes subcutaneous fat in the face and neck.

You've got time - the process will work for you eventually.

Hi Rob,
Glad to see you're back from your surgery!! That's a huge accomplishment in itself-that you were able to lose enough weight (and keep it off) to qualify for plastics!!! Great job!

I lose from my stomach first, then around my shoulders. My butt is always the last to lose.

I am a pear shape, but my boobs are bigger now that I am older (I was a B cup in high school, now I'm an f'ing DD).
