My doctors said with a sit down desk job 1-2 weeks if you don't have any lifting. Did you ask about the family medical leave act paperwork? They have to save a job for you. I had saved 3 weeks vacation for surgery but the dr appts had taken up 1 whole week so now i have only 2 weeks left. i played around with the calendar to figure out the best time...i am scheduled for 11/15 thursday (only do i on mondays and thursdays) I hope to take 1 keek off and then work half days for 1 -2 weeks. i will just need to get up and walk every hour or so. maybe this type of schedule will make your boss happier.
that said, I'm planning on 2 weeks off of my office job, with some probable working from home on week two...

I didn't need to take off all of that time but my doctor said I could and I had plenty of sick leave built up. I did actually still get tired in the afternoons up to the six week mark though.
That being said, I think your doc is being pretty conservative--4-6 weeks sounds more like if they had to do the surgery open, which is a possibility with any surgery, but not likely. I've told my supervisor that I'm planning on two weeks; it could always be longer; it also could be less.
If there's a time that your absence would have less impact on your workplace, it would probably be good to schedule the surgery with that in mind as well.
Good luck.
At my company we're able to work from home if we need to (we have laptops we cart back and forth, and I forward my office phone to my Blackberry), so I had surgery on a Monday and was off the rest of that week. The next week I worked from home, although I certainly could have gone to the office. After that I went in as usual and have never looked back.
Everyone is different, but I think 2 weeks would probably be plenty for someone who is otherwise healthy and has no surgical complications.
