Ready for Atlanta...not ready for the long flight to get there!
I work for an airline and also have a flying anxiety . I am flying from DFW to ATL Thursday afternoon and will be arriving between 7 & 8 pm. I find it best to keep myself occupied while in the air. I take my iPad or Nook and play games while in the air. I also take earplugs or listen to music so as not to hear the airplane/engine sounds and to keep my ears from stopping up. As far as food, I find that I don't get the munchies when I am doing something. I do have a love of coffee, so I take my empty non-spillable thermal mug with me (if you take one be sure to have it out and send it through the xray machine. TSA may or may not pull you aside to test it but rememver, it is to assure the safety of everyone in the airport and in the air). It's easy to pour a purchased coffee into the mug and, when on the plane, flight attendants usually don't mind pouring coffee directly into my mug. I have also been able to locate lite proten drinks (low carb) at a lot of airports. That combined with a banana is usually all I need to get from point A to point B. I can only eat a little at a time, so one lasts the entire flight. I keep the rest in a baggie for the next "meal". I have also taken powder sticks and mixed them with bottled water during the flight. FYI...there is a W*****t Express 0.2 miles from the hotel, so you may be able to pick up some goodies there once you arrive!
After I get through airport security, I buy a bag of nuts and a bottle of water. That's it. It's on purpose because I stress eat. I nurse those nuts for the entire trip. I never, ever pee on an airplane. Nope. Not happening. I eat some nuts. Wait 30 minutes. Sip some water. Wait a awhile (usually another 30 minutes if I can make it). Eat more nuts. 30 minutes. Water. Repeat. It gives me something to look forward to "in 30 minutes I'm having another handful of nuts." I know, it's childish, but that's what I do.
It works well for me.
But, if all else fails, order the drink.
I also pack a small DVD/TV player thingy. I get to watch fun movies and not the stupid movie the airlines pick. Usually I end up having 3 or 4 people hanging over my seat trying to watch my movie.
Oh yeah, ear plugs are your friend.
Have fun!

You're probably in the air already........ Hope you're anxiety is easing off. Your post cracks me up cuz I just went through the same thing!
I got to the airport last night for my flight and my head hunger kicked in - for me, Flying=Eating! I used to just eat my way through a flight . I put a protein bar in my bag, found a small 3/4 oz beef jerky to buy and succumbed to buying a couple of Ghirardelli chocolate squares..... Guess what? Didn't eat any of it! I had a chat with myself once on the plane and decided I didn't need to eat - I wasn't hungry. Will save the jerky, but will get rid of the chocolate.
Have a great time at the OH conference!

I am a super nervous flyer..i take anxiety meds, pray, deep breathe, play games, read, watch videos...and still..i freak! You just have to realize, statistically, flying is the safest form of travel. Traveling in the morning, in the fall, even better, less heat rising up, less turbulance.

Oh my pretty lady! In just over 24 hours we are going to be partying, we are going to have a blast and it will all be worth it. I just put together my list of everything that needs to go with me and I am starting to freak out a bit. I have not been on a plane in almost 14 years and never by myself!
It's exciting and nerve wracking, we are going to do this and be so happy we did.
Oh and I can't promise I won't come off the plane stinking drunk, but I am going to try my hardest not to

Take some drugs! I take dramamin every time I fly for motion sickness, but it also has a great relaxation effect and usually puts me to sleep for a few hours. I fly cross county a few times a year and it is a major help.
Just realized this advise might be a bit late, but you can do it on the way home...
