For you Runners out there, how do you control your breathing?  I got on Treadmill today first time in three weeks b/c I was packing and moving, however I think I used that as a slight excuse.  But seriously I'm good for about the first 5 mins and then my breathing get off and screws up my whole grove. Then I have to Walk/Run...  Am I doing something wrong or I just need to suck it up and work my way up in time??? Please help I so want to RUN a MILE! lol

Best way is to start off using a program like couch to 5k (c25k). It will gradually get you up to a 5 k. Running also gets easier the less you weigh. It does take time to increase your cardio base, but with a program like c25k it's easier, it's a run/walk program. That's how I started. I'm going to start training for a half marathon in a couple weeks. Good luck!

Agree with C25K.

I also regulate my breathing by the type of music I'm listening to. If I need to slow my breathing because I'm freaking, I listen to upbeat music but not as upbeat if that makes sense.

Yep... I too started running by doing c25k. I agree with the advise to pace your breathing as well. I find that, when I get tired, I can last longer if I focus on my breathing pattern. The in through the nose, out through the mouth method works best for me

When I run I'm breathing by mouth only maybe that's my problem, I will try in/nose out/mouth lol

I understand in/nose and out/mouth is wrong. I have been researching this on the Internet to help me with my C25k program.  Many sites suggest breathing in through the mouth and nose into the diaphragm.  Google it.  Breathing while running.  There's a lot of info out there from credible sources.

There are two reasons I am out of breath when i first start a run - one, because my pace is too quick and i need to back down a little and two, because of anxiety. Honestly, almost every run I hve, I START out of breath  - like within 1-2 min I feel like im dying. But, Ive pushed through it until I realized it's psychological - i want to give myself a reason to quit. But, I learned about 4-5 months ago, I can't. Unless my heart rate corresponds to my out of control breathing - I dont stop. But I can now (and this was just within the last 2 months) realize whether its option 1-2.

When in doubt, try and slow down before you stop altogether. I believe your body will tell you when to stop.

Thanks for posting this- I have similar trouble when running and am going to try harder to regulate my breaths. I'm starting week 4 of C25k today, and highly recommend it!
