VSG and steroids....can anyone relate and tell me what to expect!

Hello all,

I'm about 6 1/2 months post-op VSG and have serious sinus issues and now my ENT is putting me on the Medrol dose pack of steroids for 6 days.  This is the worst time ever considering my wedding is next Saturday, and I have afford to gain any weight between now and then...was hoping to lose a few more.  Has anyone had to take oral steroids after VSG?  If so how did it affect you.  Any advise or info is much appreciated!!!
I have a ways to go, but by the grace of God I will reach my goal!!!

Not taken any steroids in years and when I took them it was prednizone. I am guessing it will depend on the dosage and what type they are. The doctor should be able to tell you what to expect. I would give them a call.

I have been written a script for steroids many times to basically "open up my airways" to help me breathe better......at the same time I was given an antibiotic to help also.  I personally never filled the prescription for the steroid.  I never felt it was necessary......my blood Ox was fine.  Steroids want cure you....all they do is help with the symptoms you are dealing with.

If your Oxygen level is low and you are struggling to breathe, by all means follow your Dr.s advice, but if you were checked and it was fine at the visit.....I would consider skipping it.

Congrats on the nuptuals and hope you feel better soon!!

Thanks for the replies.  Unfortunately it's necessary as I've dealt with this before expect it was before VSG.  The steroids help with imflammation by 90%, so I guess I have to do what I have to do.  My health and feeling better before getting on a flight and risk eardrum rupture from being  so inflammed than a few pounds, so I'll suck it up and work hard to really control my diet for the week of steroids.

Steroids did increase my hunger.  Just be aware of it- it was not intolerable.

I am 6 months out and was put on a burst and taper of steroids about a month ago for another severe case of poison ivy. Sigh.  Anyway, when I have taken them preop they made me hungry, but postop I did not have that reaction, however, they did give me a mild stomach ache.  I wasn't doubled over in pain or anything but I was aware that my stomch didn't feel quite right. It went away as soon as I was done with the steroids.   PS:  Hope your wedding day is lovely! Congratuations and Best Wishes!

Did steroids for two weeks(?) back in February. It wasn't super fun, I was hungrier than normal and they made me pretty grouchy

Stay on plan. Ask yourself if you really need to eat if/when you get hungry. Track or journal everything you're eating to stay on track.

With my pregnancy last year, I was on steroids for over 30 days. Of course, I gained weight, I was in my last 4 weeks of pregnancy.

I can tell you that my hunger was horrible. I was starving. I pushed fluids to avoid overeating.

I've had two rounds of dose-packs since surgery, one for a bad reaction- and one for a serious case of bronchitis.. Both made me feel "pushed" and a little more nibbly- but no gains. Longer term doses- yeah, you can put on some weight or water weight with them.. the Medrol pack, I wouldn't sweat it too much.
