Any1 hav VSG and lost a lot w/o a lot of EXERCISE??
All I have been doing since the surgery is walking the malls near us. They are about 2.5 miles around/each one. I try and walk about 3 times a week then head to Six Flags on the weekends to do more walking then ride the rides. I haven't done any hardcore working out since I had the surgery and I am at a 60lbs loss ATM so it can be done but it comes off more slowly.
Have a great day and hope this helps....

I lost 137lbs in 10.5 months without daily exercise for the first 4 months, worked out mainly weight training and one day of cardio/ab/core workouts from month 4-8. Had gallbladder with extensive scar tissue/adhesion removal surgery at 8 months post-op, and stopped working out all together. I've never picked up the "workout" bug and haven't ever picked up in 3 years. Not that I don't have the desire, I do, but my lazy bone wins.

I didn't do any "exercise" as I had 2 large hernias and loss of abdominal domain (intestines outside abdominal wall). I recently had abdominal wall reconstruction. I had a huge complication with the incisions getting infected requiring a second surgery 3 weeks after the first and another week in the hospital. I am now almost 4 weeks out from the second surgery and 7 weeks from the original surgery and hopefully I will be cleared for full activity on Wednesday at Dr's appointment. Point of the story is that I still want to close @ 30 more pounds and I can't wait to exercise. I have been a sloth for years - always afraid Im going to need emergency surgery for an incarceration of the hernias (have been on my way to the ER more times than I can remember before I could "pop" everything back in) I can't wait to ride a bike or walk my kids to school - do weight training and rebuild my underlying muscles to speed up my metabolism, see how all my loose skin looks against a toned body before I plan more plastics etc ... Are you asking because you don't like exercise or because,, like me, you can't exercise? Bottom line is, I think if you can't exercise you need to be vigilant with your diet during your losing phase. I ate no carbs except from fruits and vegetables and ate almost all protein and fats associated with the protein. Good Luck!
This question seems to come up regularly.
The simple answer is can you lose weight without exercise. The simple answer is - It Depends. If you are on a 600 calorie a day diet, you will lose weight. Maybe not as fast or as much as others, but you will lose.
The real answer is a lot more complicated. When you start off after surgery, you are losing very quickly. YOur bulky body requires a lot more energy just to manage the tasks of daily living. Evey time you move its cardio exercise and strength training.
As you lose, it takes less and less energy to move you around. You start losing more slowly. By the time thia happens you will have lost on average 25-35 percent of your excess body weight. On a 600-800 calorie diet this would be at around the 3 month mark for most people. This is where a lot of people who don't exercise see their first BIG slow down. The mechanical process described above happens - you just dont burn as much as you used to. Your body starts to adjust the furnace as well, your metabolism starts changing in relation to the rest of your body changes.
You are only a quarter of the way home, you don't want your body doing that. Exercise is how you keep your metabolism up at the previous levels. Combining a schedule of cardio and strength training will do two things for you. The cardio will keep the cycle of glycogenesis going where you burn up glycogen and force your bidy to rebuild your stores. The strength training coupled with high protein will build up your lean muscle mass. The muscle burns more calories just sitting there than fat does - so that keeps your metabolism up.
Can you lose weight without exercise- yes you can. Should you - No.
Keep in mind that Exercise does NOT mean spending every day in a gym or doing some intense workout. Early on my exercise consisted of just walking around my neighborhood or incorporaing more physical eactivities into my routine life. For example, I would walk to the grocery store down the street instead of driving to pick up little things. I would take the extra half hourat lunch where I wasn't eating and walk down the street. IN the morning while waiting for water to boil for my eggs I would do chest presses or squats on a kitchen chair. You can do simple easy things to get your exercises in.
For me I found that the more I did, the easier it got, and the more i enjoyed it. It was easy to keep pushing myself a little bit further because I wanted it.
Do you have an exercise physiologist on your program? You can ask them for specific advise on how to start based on your own medical conditions.

^ This is precisely my experience. I lost 200 lbs but found I had to start walking 3-4 times a week to keep it up after the first 3-4 months. It is different though exercising closer to a normal weight then when MO. I now get out and run a few times a week and actually enjoy it. Still have not gotten into the gym thing but am planning on getting a home gym. even new you can get then for a few hundred. Small investment for what you gain. coming from someone who lost a mass amount of weight, I wish I had done more strength training throughout. I am a skinny little shrimp now. A first time experience for me. I would strongly recommend setting yourself up for success by starting it early on.
I walked 2-3 times a week. Nothing major. I did work on my arms and thighs with push ups and squats.
I just started going to the gym w hubby because I want some muscle definition. I had good tone because I used to work out a lot in my 20's. I haven't been able to get that same commitment level due to some interruptions.

My first question to you is this: "Why do you ask? Are you physically unable to exercise? Do you not want to exercise? Why is this of interest to you?"
I chose to look at exercise this way: I was obese and frankly, exercise was a literal pain for me. It hurt to walk my dogs at a decent pace. I got winded walking too fast down the hall at work. God forbid I should have to walk up a hill or a flight of stairs. I didn't like to exercise because it was so physically difficult.
But.... I forced myself! Pre op all I did was walk several times a week. Post op all I did fo six weeks was wal****il I was cleared at six weeks for full exercise. Then I hesitated and waited and mulled it over and finally at 9 weeks out I bit the bullet and started exercising.
Yes, I got the bug, too. I am a gym rat - you don't need to be, but for me that works. I've also lost a lot of inches because of the exercise. LIke last month, I lost only 6 pounds, but another inch and a half off my waist. I am now wearing the same size clothes I wore as a college student 28 years ago. Without exercise I don't believe that would be the case.
The reason I think it is so important is because you have to keep your lean muscle mass from being used to provide energy as you lose weight. Without exercise it is easy to become a skinny, but still fat person. You want to hang on to as much lean muscle mass as possible during WL to keep your metabolism as high as possible. Without the exercise you are at a very high risk of lowering your metabolism even farther as you continue to lose weight. Rhearob explained it pretty darn well.
So sure, you can lose weight without exercise, but I wouldn't encourage choosing that path.
