Hebrew National 97% fat free Hot Dogs

Before surgery, there was nothing I loved more than a hot dog.  Gimme a foot long or two on a bun, ketchup and fries I was in hog heaven.  In Nashville, we have a place called Hot Diggity Dog that specializes in hot dogs, Chicago style (Why does Chicago have their own style of EVERYTHING?).  They would see my car turn in and start my order.

Naturally I was excited when I saw the nutritional info on these, and they could fit into my diet - no bun and fries of course.  So I bought some and tried them last night.

OH MY GOD - THEY WERE SOOOO NASTY.

I don't know if I was just detoxed from the taste of beef or what, but I hated them.   They had this gross texture to the casing and the meat tasted more like a vegan dog (Another crime against nature).  My next hot dog won't be until maintenance when I can have a real one.

I'm curious though, was this just me or what was your experience with these?

LOL!! Yep some things were just meant to be fooled around with!  I am a tried and true Hebrew National Beef Hot Dog lover, or Nathan's Hot Dogs.  Also ketchup and fries!  It will be sweet when you finally have it!  Being from NY, I'm not much for anything Chicago - hot dogs or pizza!  But to each his own.

I'm with you there.  I love NYC style food - I never get the Chicago style dogs at this place - always the NYC style.  And Chicago style pizza- just too much!

Honestly, there is nothing I like better than a street cart hot dog walking around the city on a spring day!

Nope they are horrid.  I'm a life long Hebrew National hotdog eater and the 97% are horrid.  I don't mind the reduced fat ones but the 97% YUCK!  I've had one of the reduced fat ones since surgery and can fit it in for a BBQ but it isn't something I'd eat all the time.

I just posted about these dogs a week or so ago. I'm German in a German town with authentic German food. We eat lots of Goetta and most people outside of Cincinnati don't even know what Goetta is; however, I love the HN 97% fat free dogs. Tastes like most other salty processed meat to me. I really love them because they are almost no carbs, some protein and only 40 calories. I can eat two dogs for less damage than one cookie...that's cool!

Taste is such a personal and subjective thing. Now that I am getting thin and loving it, food is just a means to stay alive and not life itself as before. I usually don't even think about food unless I'm really hungry and then I just want protein and veggies.

I hope that you find something that you like and that fills you up without much damage. Good luck!

Greg

I'm like you I actually love the stuff I eat now.  Everything tastes sooo much better than when all I ate was Beef and Potatoes, or Pasta, etc.  Thats why I was excited to try these when I saw the posts last week - I though well, I can introduce something I used to love and it actually NOT kill my plan.

It just didn't work out for me.  Back to my chicke breast.  Glad it did for you!

Well I love goetta too - I'm a transplanted (to northern Ohio) Cincinnatian. I'm guessing no goetta anymore for you or are you able to eat it in moderation?

I limit myself to one slice and no more than once every week or two.  Actually we have a "Diet Workshop" recipe for low fat goetta that is really pretty good.  It's still kind of high on the carbs so I don;t eat too much of that either.  Goetta Fest is this weekend in Newport and I think we will have to have at least a taste

Just tried these hot off the grill last Sat, not bad imo.. esp for the cal/prot. I do much prefer my Nathan's, dripping grease over a fire on a sharp stick, but in deference to healthier eating- these do ok for me for scratching the hot dog itch, when good and hot.. cooled off, not as much. I eat hotdogs maybe 2-3x a year, so I may or may not get them again.. but since I had just had Nathans the week prior, I really didn't want to revisit the grease-bomb that is a good dog so soon again!
