Opinions on Celebrex

On my surgeon consult the doctor said I'd have to go off Nsaids for 2 weeks prior to surgery and than a whole year after.  (I thought they had only said 6 weeks after at the info session.)   He said after recovery I could take Celebrex instead os Naproxen or Motrin.    I'm just wondering about this since Celebrex is an NSaid.  Is it milder than the other Nsaids?  If so why is it a prescription drug and not over the counter like the other Nsaids.    I just want to make sure this stuff would be safe to take as I deal with fibromylgia pain and orthopeadic pain constantly.   Tylenol doesn't work.

Ok, you're gonna get a range of opinions on this. . . Celebrex is not TECHNICALLY an NSAID but is, instead, a Cox 2 inhibitor.  My doctor discourages using it EVER.  But I have terrible arthritis and am waiting for knee replacement surgery now, so sometimes I have no choice but to take it.  I first take a Prevacid for my stomach and then take the Celebrex with food . . . usually I open up the capsule and sprinkle it in my food.  Usually I get away with it not hurting my stomach, but sometimes it does.  Gotta choose your poison, I guess. . . Some docs seem to think that our stomachs are the same as pre-surgery, only smaller. . . but I think most err on the side of caution, for fear of causing bleeding in our tiny stomachs.

I still have a very large stomach but I'm just trying to plain ahead for pain meds since I have fybromylgia and teneditias, plantar fasciitis, migranes and a knee problems as well.   Tylenol is too week even extra strength.
I'm worried that Celebrex maybe stronger medicine for the stomach than alleve or motrin.

Have you had surgery yet?  DON'T take Alleve or Motrin.  And ASK about taking Celebrex.  You're right, Tylenol doesn't do much, but the arthritis strength Tylenol is pretty good. . . it's 650 mg. each, I think.

Yeah I haven't had surgery yet.  Not having it til Oct or Nov.  ONce I get cleared for all the tests.  Is Arthritis strength Tylenol presciption or over the counter?

It's over the counter.  Not as good as an NSAID but next best thing.  Of course, it does nothing for swelling you get with arthritis.  My knee is still huge, but at least it doesn't throb.

Just thinking you could roll biofreeze on your knee too.  It's kind of like the idea of icing it but when we are on the go and do not have time to use ice we could roll that stuff on.    I think it helps with the inflammation a bit.  (but again not as much as Nsaids)

I have been on Celebrex for roughly a year...give or take....I had to dc it for the surgery....as is typical with NSAIDS....Celebrex can also cause more bleeding.....my surgeon does not want me to go back on it......however, it is the only thing..along with the vicodin and cymbalta that helps with the pain.
I can tell you that it never bothered my stomach

the rest of my body misses it terribly..
