To the pre-ops/newly sleeved -

Ive seen sooo many newbie post-ops going through some serious issues - so I have a recommendation:

Before you go cutting out your stomach, stop for a bit and consider what the heck you are doing. This is not another diet, this isn't something that is going to be anything close to easy. Doctors are not in a position to tell you how hard this is unless they have done it themselves. That being said, it can be much harder than it needs to be if your head is not screwed on straight.

Sooo - I would recommend sitting down and making a list of your expectations, what you think life post VSG is going to be like (2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months after surgery) and talk to a veteran sleever about it - and maybe you'll get some constructive feed back before you cut yourself open and open the flood gates of hormones and emotional breakdowns. I for one would be very happy to review your list of what you are expecting to get out of this surgery and give you a realistic idea of what to expect.

I'm not an expert, and i obviously have different views on things than other vets, but I am prepared to tell you that:

- you will not wake up skinny, and you wont lose as much weight as you think you might
- you are severing nerves in your stomach and wont feel restriction for a while
- you aren't going to feel like your old self within a couple days or weeks, or even months
-- you may or may not feel hungry, and you may beed a PPI if you do
- your sleeve is a tool and you will have to put a lot of hard work in to get to goal - a small stomach does not mean automatic weight loss.

You will have to forgive my horrible typos on my ipad - this sucks!

Amen!  Preach on acbbrown!!!

I haven't even had surgery yet and I agree with you!  This is not something to rush into and it's not something that is going to work without work (if that makes sense).

I love my iPad, but not for typing out anything lengthy.

I also love your post.  I am new to the sleeve, but not new to WLS.  I used to get so disheartened when I would see post after post of what I felt were very ignorant questions.  Not that the people were dumb, just so uninformed.  My initial surgeon was of NO HELP, he had no aftercare, to speak of and especially no care before surgery.  I took the time to educate myself the best that I could and learned so much from vets on the LapBand board.

I expect those that I work with and know socially to not understand why I am not suddenly skinny, can't eat certain things, etc., but we shouldn't see the same absence of knowledge in those that have opted to undergo a very dangerous surgery.  It's sad.

My surgeon was useless, but I knew that going in, so I sought out other resources, so I could be prepared. I guess I just figured this was the most drastic thing I could do to my body/life, so i was damn well going to be prepared afterwards. I expected much worse, so even while my recovery wasnt perfect, it was well within my expectations. Problems really pop up when you expect to have a perfect recovery and wake up normal....
