Hunger? True hunger?

I am 5 weeks out with my sleeve, and confused.

Although my LapBand was a jerk and did not let me eat healthy meats and veggies very often, the band did eliminate hunger.

Since being on foods, after the first two weeks, I have been hungry a lot.  Now, I made the mistake of giving in to PMS cravings during that first week of eating "solids".  I had some chocolate, and some fried onions.    I think that ignited my carb addiction.....and anyone cursed with that knows how carbs can make you feel hungry.

The hunger usually starts about 30 minutes to an hour after eating lunch, and stays with me all friggen afternoon, until I eat dinner.  It was suggested that it might be acid.  I am on a PPI inhibitor.  I don't feel any heartburn, but when the hunger starts there is a lot of bubbling and gurgling going on in my new stomach.

So, could this be acid and not true hunger?  I upped my dose of meds yesterday, waiting to see if that helps.  I am also staying away from as many carbs as I can.
Please lend me any insight or advice you might have.  I went without hunger for 4 years, and this isn't fun!  Ha ha

I've had hunger since day one, got worse in the last week and I'm 3 months out.  And not head hunger!

Let us know how uping the PPI does!  Good luck

Egads....have you tried a PPI?  Maybe that will help us both.

I definitely confused hunger with acid reflux.  Even though I was on Prilosec (which did almost nothing for me), it wasn't until I switched to Protonix 40mg that I got complete relief.  Sleevie still has his loud obnoxious days but I don't think of hunger.   It seems like it takes a week or two to notice the difference with PPI's.

That is really wild about you not having hunger when banded but it feels like it with the sleeve!

What are you having for lunch every day? Are you getting in enough protein during that meal?

Also, how soon after eating are you supposed to start drinking? Are you sipping again as soon as you are allowed to do so? Sometimes thirst can feel like hunger.

I normally have leftovers for lunch, so some kind of chicken and veggies if there is room.  My plan says to wait 20-30 minutes to wait before drinking.

I am hoping that it is just acid, but I realize not everyone loses their hunger.

I do get some hunger during the day, but at least it's not like it was before surgery.

Honestly, I don't think it's a terrible thing that I do get a little hungry, because at least that keeps me from forgetting to eat.  I'd never meet my protein goals each day if I forgot to eat...lol :)

LOL it was great not having hunger, but not great never getting to eat without sliming or feeling pain.  I did a little better today, but I also kept protein packed snacks with me.

This could very well be acid, not hunger! I had the very same symptoms start at about 3 - 3 1/2 months out. I had no issues with reflux after the first week post op, so my doc kept me on an H2 (Pepcid)  rather than a PPI. Once the gurgling, rumbling and feelings of real hunger started, I thought to myself, "Oh God, please no..... no hunger yet.......it's too soon." Literally, I panicked a bit.

I had always thought of acid as reflux. Not so, I came to find out. My surgeon's in house MD immediately put me on Prilosec twice daily and viola! the symptoms of gurgling and insatiable hunger disappeared. I am to take the PPI until I hit goal and then meet with the docs again to evaluate whether I still need them or can wean myself off the PPI.

If you're on a PPI (not an H2) you may want to talk with your surgeon or PCP and try a different one. There are several available and some are more effective than others.

Good to know, I'm on prilosec, one tab daily.  Maybe I should try to take it in the morning instead of at night before dinner.  I was hesitant to take it in the morning and run the risk my multi doesn't absorb.
