Having procedure open?

Hi Everyone,

I had my medical history and phyiscal appointment with my surgeon today so they could finally submit to insurance for band to sleeve revision. He said there is a higher chance of them having to do the procedure open. He asked if I would be okay with that. I never really put that into consideration but he made it sound with the scar tissue being there where the band is, it may block their vision to where they really can't see everything with the scope. I told my mom this information and she said I should really re-consider having it done now since having it open can cause more problems.
I wanted to find out if anyone else had to have their revision procedure open rather than laparoscopically when having the band removed at the same time?

Edit to add:
If anyone has had the procedure open, how did this affect your recovery time, pain, etc?

Any information, advice is appreciated.

I already posted on the revision forum before I posted here. I wanted to hear from those who may have had the sleeve procedure open instead of laparoscopically.

Thanks for the reply.

No personal experience, but having to open is a risk with any surgery... ofcourse the more u've had done in the past, whether a band or any other abdominal surgeries, will put u at increased risk of them having to open and the dr is legally obligated to make that clear to u just in case... idk what prob ur having with the band, but I assume since ur revising, ur having some issue... so I would do it! Anything's gotta b better than a band that's not doin' it's job, right!?

that said, i'd ask the doc out of how many revisions they've done, how many have they had to open (personally, not nat'l avgs) and if ur unsure of how ell it compares maybe see if u can find nat'l avgs or call other drs offices and ask...

Generally speaking open is supposidly a little more painful... however, i've had patients who have had open surgery, then have a laproscopic procedure complain that the gas pain is way worse then their open incision was... so as with anything, i think it's a case by case thing and open or lap, should b manageable with meds... recovery time is extended with open, i'd ask ur dr his particulars, but i'm pretty sure going back to work afte a wk would b out of the question... i'd think he/she would make u take off atleast 4, if not 6, wks...

hope u get some answers from ppl who have had open surgery... GOOD LUCK!
