Okay I've been debating about getting my VSG surgery by 3 doctors.  Dr Joya Dr Aceves or Dr Alvarez.  I have spoken to a few references on Dr Aceves and Dr Alvarez but only 1 on Dr. Joya.  There's not really a lot of info on Dr Joya as there is on the 2 doctors As so I want to know why.  He charges the least of the three doctors so I haven't ruled him out yet.  But I just don' t have enough info.   Any one have their VSG with Dr Joya that would be willing to talk to me?  I like the fact that Dr Joya includes more time for his patients to stay than the other doctors.

Just curious- how long does Joya have patients stay, and is it a hospital or clinica/recovery house? Aceves does three nights post-op.

4 nights post op
2 at the hospital
2 at the hotel in walking distance from the hospital

(1 night preop at the hotel)  You can get more nights than this at the hotel at his discount if a patient wants.  Also if a patients pays into his complication fund should they have any trouble of any kind they can stay longer at the hospital.

A friend's husband is an emergency physician in PV, he recommended Dr. Joya without hesitation, i think if he had a reputation for problems, my friend would wave big red flag for me. its my own anxiety holding me back.
i hate the thought of another fat summer, but alas...

I had my surgery with Dr. Joya in 2008.  I only have good things to say about him and his staff.  I received excellent care at the hospital and at the hotel...which by the way, were both spotless.  Because of my age and the fact that I traveled alone, I chose to stay a few days longer at the hotel for a mini-vacation.  By my second day at the hotel, I was walking the beach, the next day to the shopping area a few blocks from the hotel, and then took a taxi downtown to explore.  My recovery was uneventful and by the time I returned home, I was able to return to work full time.  In all this time, I have never had an issue with my VSG.  Any time I am asked, I always recommend Dr. Joya.  But, you must understand, each person thinks their doctor is the best so you will have to decide what is best for you.

Blessings on your jouney.....Dee

i had good experience in Tiquana with Dr. Ortiz.  i don't know that he is the best but he is definitely solid.  he is not the cheapest but he is not the most expensive either.  he is very experienced and gives you a small sleeve.   at least i got a very small sleeve.  i think this is important because it is the whole point of the vsg.  $7,000 included everything including four-day stay.  I paid for three additional nights at Marriott because i wanted to be sure there were no problems and that i would be ready to fly back to the east coast.

It is good that you are taking your time doing research.

I have just returned from mexico after having my sleeve done by Dr joya on april 18.
The entire experience was as advertised..from the initial phone call to gerald to having the surgery.
Met at the airport {our flight was late} No hassel check in at the hotel {we did a room upgrade -view of the ocean} Easy check in the morning of surgery followed by a pleasant and efficient admission by nursing and lab staff.
Had a preop  ECG, met with an internest, psychologist, surgeon and his assistant....then in the OR by noon.
The staff were all so kind and helpful......I am a retired nurse so was very happy to be cared for by young nurses who worked with nursing students in tow...........The care was excellent..never a wait for meds, private rooms, the entire place was clean and bright.
Two days in the hospital then to the hotel where we were again well taken care of. I would highly recommend Dr Joya and his staff.
I would also highly recommend the hotel and there staff.
We booked extra days at the beginning and at the end so that I have returned home post-op with a great tan!
