Musings From my 2 Week Check-up
For a very long detailed version of my musings, it's in my latest blog entry on OH. Short and condensed version:
Tomorrow will mark my 3 week anniversary, and I am already in love with my sleeve, but still need time to figure this booger out.
I had lost 10.5 pounds at my check-up last Thursday, which I am happy with. I was also released to soft proteins and vegetables and some fruits.
It really is amazing how each surgeon has their own timelines and guidelines regarding food plans. For instance, I can have chicken breast, but no red meat (ground included****il 4 weeks of soft proteins. The NUT said something about red meat being harder to digest.
I have also been told to replace one meal a day with a protein shake, make it the time of day that I am very busy and don't have time to concentrate on my food. That's breakfast for me. I have had to have one of those for breakfast for the last 4 years, because with my band, my stoma was too closed up to take in any real food in the AM. So, that's not a problem for me, I just know some surgeons counsel against using protein shakes. I could come up with more examples, but it's obvious we all have different instructions on how to live with our sleeves.
I will definitely not pass judgement on anyone else's plan, and will do my best to follow my surgeon's plan. So far, so good. What I love about this board is we are all able to support each other with the common issues and victories we will be going through. I see so many more "Weight Goal Reached" on tickers over here than I EVER saw on the LapBand board. That should tell you something!!
My doc set a really high goal for me with my weightloss. He basically wants me to get to the lower end of the BMI scale. I don't necassarily believe in the BMI scale, as I KNOW my frame size is large even if my heighth is not....and, my bones are heavy after carrying about all of my excess weight for so long. However, I will keep his goal in mind. When I get down to MY goal of 150, I will then see if losing another 45 pounds is possible. Yikes, can't imagine being 105 pounds!!!
It seems that 2 oz of protein is about the amount I can eat at one sitting. I get a lot of loud gurgling in my stomach while eating and after eating. It's very similar to hunger pains. Any thoughts? I do take a PPI daily, but maybe it could still be acid?
I get rid of my leaky sidekick, that pesky JP Drain. My sleeve and I are getting to know each other. I am betting on this relationship being much healthier and better than my band ever was!! Thanks for all of the support, you guys are great!!

I get the gurgling noises when I drink my water and protein shakes and my stomach rumbles ALL the time. My doctor said this is common and normal and with some people it will last a short time and others could last a year (my sister, who had the sleeve done two years ago, said this is called the "grouch pouch" lol). I just know that I'm not hungry and try not to associate the grumbling feeling with eating...hope this helps :-) Good luck!
you had to take your JP drain home with you? oh goodness... they took mine out right before discharging me. yucky poo. I get the gurgling.... its weird. its the same sound my tub makse when draining the water out... lol. it only happens when i drink and the liquid is emptying into my stomach. my husband and I laugh about it cuz its not the most quiet of sounds.
Yeah, JP Drain was my sidekick for 2 weeks and 2 days. My surgeon requires it since he was removing my band at the same time, and scar tissue from that is a higher risk of a leak, and I am 5 hours away from him...so, he is ultra cautious. It sucked, but it's all over with now! yay!!
Yeah, my stomach is super loud, as well. Can't wait to be in a quiet meeting at work. ha ha ha

Wow I was sleeved a week before you on 03/26/12 and I wish I was able to eat what you are eating! My surgeon still has me on mushy foods and let me tell you they are getting old!!! But when I tried tuna my tummy did not like it too much. It kind of floors me the differences in what the surgeons have us eat. I don't think I could tolerate a soft protein right now? My stomach is kind of blah..........but I'm not sure if that is just it healing or not getting any food it likes?
Hey Melly,
Yes it's a different world than that of the band. Food wise also as you will learn. How tall are you? Our weight goals are the same in terms of goal and it seems crazy to me too but i think it's great that your surgeon wants that of you since most surgeons call it success if a patient reaches the high end of the bmi and it is such a huge range. My beginning food stages were different than yours. i was on liquids, 1 week, full liquids, 1 week purees, 2 weeks soft but no chicken (unless canned****il week 6. I remember extending n=my full liquid stage because i felt unsure about putting anything heavier in my sleeve. But i was one of the lucky ones who never had any problems getting in my protein or water. I do miss the weight loss and the fact that i could eat anything i wanted with the band as opposed to being constantly on a diet. that was the biggest adjustment for me, that and i have hunger with the sleeve, nothing horrible but i literally had none with the band. what i do not miss is the adjustments or the slimeing. so i guess you get you give.
