Not loosing, really???

Had surgery on 2/28.  The 1st week lost 1lb, 2nd week - 9lbs, 3rd - 3.6lbs, this week 0.4 gain!!!  UGH!  What's with that?  I started the mushies this week, and I'm just now getting 4tbs of food in each meal.  Once and a while I can't finnish the full 4 TBS. I'm not eating much carbs at all, I'm mostly eating protein because I'm afraid of gaining.

I'm just worried, has this happened to anyone else right in the beginning.  I'm doing what I'm supposed to do.   I have an appointment tomorrow.  We'll see what they say.  Thanks, Sharon

Sharon, I think your having your first stall, put  the scale away for a week, keep working your plan, high protein low carb and you will probably lose inches eventually the scale will start moving again...mine about this time, lasted 3 weeks, eating about 600 calories a day...but my belt when down a notch or two....

Thanks so much!!!!  I've had a nightmare with the band, then removal, now this and I've been a little afraid that I won't loose with this either.  So all these posts really encourage me to let that go!  Thanks!  Sharon

Yep, sounds like your normal 3 week stall, granted it happens in the 4th week too.

Put the scale away, stick to your plan, measure your inches.
You will see a change in how your clothes fit before you see the numbers on the scale move.

Eventually the scale catches up.

Great job on your weight loss!

This is very normal.  Here's the explanation behind it:

Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet.

As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

Just keep following your plan and you'll be fine!

I lost all 96 of my pounds this way!  Lose well for a week, then stall for 2-3 weeks.  It's annoying, but I can't argue with the overall result!

Thank you, thank you for that great explaination!!!!  I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!  Being a band revision, I've been fighting the "it's hopeless"  battle and finely got encouraged by the good weight loss on week two.  I'm really going to let things go and just keep on plan, stop stressing and go with the flow.  I have an appt. with my surgeon today and we'll see what he says too.

I really appreciate the wealth of knowledge you bring to the table and thank you for the education.  Sharon

I just hit my first stall as well and had my surgery a week after you.  I was freaking out a little inside, but kept chugging along, knowing that stalls do break.  Mine FINALLY broke this morning.

You aren't alone!
