I never had true reflux symptoms. Instead, I got this gnawing, twinge, "HUNGRY" sensation after I ate around 6 weeks post-op. Talked to vets here, and they all said "false hunger from acid overproduction". Went to my surgeon, talked it over, went on RX Prilosec 20mg (the generic form), and within 10-14 days my hunger was resolved.

I've stayed on PPI because I have had some breakthrough reflux, the articles on silent reflux and barrett's esophagus after partial gastrectomies scare the poop out of me, and the fact that at over 2.5 years out, I still do not experience true physical hunger.

I know a lot of people who can wean off. I just choose to stay on it.

If they don't  hurt your liver or do any other kind of damage, then why not?  Especially, if you can avoid being hungry!!  Heck, yeah!!

That's my thought process. There is some contraindications taking them long-term with concerns of calcium absorption/bone health etc etc. That's why the recommendation to take Calcium Citrate is in place, well that and because carbonate is just crappy calcium. So, I take my calcium and my PPI happily live life without hunger.
