What do you wish you had done differently...

what do you wish you had done differently in order to prepare yourself for surgery or the weeks following surgery? I seem to be stressing day in and day out about things i need and things i'm forgetting.

My surgery date is March 9th and i'm on day 3 of a 2 week pure liquid diet. So far i've had no problems with cheating or hunger. I drink water almost all day, protein shakes, and chicken broth so this part isn't bothering me. I've ordered tons of protein sample packs from multiple websites, bought all my recommended vitamins, have a fridge stocked with sf jello, 100% juices, plain yogurt, chicken broth, and isopures. i've read hundreds upon hundreds of threads on this forumn, set up a myfitnesspal.com account where i've been tracking all my liquid intake, activated my nikeplus on my phone, and started walking to exercise.
Even with all of this I can't help but think i'm forgetting something huge that is going to hinder my weight loss...

I wish someone had told me to take stool softners immediately after surgery.

7 days with no BM and no stool softner was one of the worse days of my life.

I bought a body composition scale. It tells me my weight, my body fat percentage, my total body water, percentage of muscle and bone. It's done thought electric impedance or something to that effect. I like that I can keep track of my hydration and see if im actually losing fat. It's cool.

I have one pair of yoga spandex pants that I live in. I wish I had a second pair before I went into surgery.

Baby wipes. I had the runs for a full week and baby wipes were nice. TMI?

I did get a brand new scale with all that good stuff except mine doesn't have anything about bone and muscle Percentage...it does say I'm down 9lbs in 3 days though! Lol!
I don't really get what the water percentage means or why it's suppose to be. How do I make sure in losing fat?
Yoga pants sound like a great idea..Oh and not tmi.. It's already started and I've already stocked up! Thanks!!

Lots of good ideas suggested! I also recommend a food scale, smaller dishes, small containers to take lunch to work (if you work). It's very easy to stay on plan if you take the time to plan out your meals ahead of time. In the puree stage, I would take my favorite meal (chicken pie minus the crust), puree it, freeze it in ice cube trays - they are about 1 oz each. I did the same with squash and mashed potato (yes, that was on my plan also). Then each night, I'd set up a meal for work. One cube of each for starters went into a small microwaveable dish. Eventually I got so I could eat more than one oz of chicken. Rotisserie chickens were good because they were easy and very moist. I would take all the meat off the bones and bag them in 2-3 oz packets to freeze. Then I'd add an ounce of whatever veggie I had on hand. It makes it much easy to prepare lunch ahead. Deli meats are very easy, but I am very sensitive to the sodium, so I didn't eat them as often.

Get a measuring tape and measure yourself. I started a spreadsheet to track weight lost and measurements. When your weight plateaus, focus on the measurements or other positive signs of improvement, such as blood pressure, blood sugar, energy level, etc. Keep to your plan and the weight will start coming off again.

I think you have alot of what you need prior to surgery and many great suggestions from the posters. You've done an awesome job of prepping!!

So what I would change about after surgery is I would have walked more, done more exercise in the beginning instead of almost 6 months out.  And another thing I would have changed is I would not have dropped off from my support (i.e. OH) whenever a stall hit. There was one that was almost two months and I spent about 8 months away from OH. Big mistake atleast for me. I missed out on the support, the emotional venting through blogging and posting so that I could get great advice.

To go along with measurements, I would also set your goals up on OH - the scale is not the only measure of success on this journey.

Best of luck on your surgery and journey!

Good idea to get an electric cup warmer to use for keeping your soups and food warm especially during the liquid and mushie stages.  I loved mine.  It takes so long to eat/drink meals in the beginning and it was so nice to be able to enjoy the food while still warm regarldess of how long it took to eat.  With such a small amount of food, it gets cold so quickly.  If you can not find a cup warmer, a candle warmer works just as well which is what I used.
