VSG on 02/04/12 with
My insurance covered bypass and lapband but not the sleeve because it wasn't out long enough to have the long-term data to prove it was successful.

I wasn't going to let an insurance co dictate what surgery I should get and I didn't feel right about the other two so I went self-pay across the border. It was a breeze w/o all that red tape.

Good luck, hope you can find a way to make it work one way or the other!

VSG on 01/05/12
Insurance companies don't make the decision to pay or not to pay for weight loss surgery of any kind.  It's the patients employer that makes that decision because it cost alot more for their preimum insurance plan to include it in the benefits.  Had my employer excluded it BC wouldn't have paid mine either, but it was in my benefit package.

do you require NSAIDS with the osteoarthritis?  You can't take them with RNY, but you can with the sleeve, so it could be basis or an appeal.

Good luck!

Lucy, very good point.  I do take NSAIDs for the arthritis and need them daily.

My gastroenterologist is also against the RNY because of some of the issues I've had with swallowing.    I forgot about that until I was writing this...so that may be something I can use too!

Hopefully you can get the appeal thing to work.  If not, reconsider the RNY.  Although it was not my first choice, my brother in law had it done and it has worked splendly for him.  He is a few years out.  Words cannot express how wonderful it is to get your life back, and it it were me and I had to do it over and I couldn't get the sleeve- I would do the RNY.  It is so worth it!

I do find the BMI of 50 odd- usually RNY goes along with a higher BMI or a phase 1 then phase 2 type approach.   Can you put led in your pockets when you weigh in ;)

That's so funny "led in my pockets!" ...I thought the same thing ! ;)

Had I  known this would be an issue, I'd have layered my entire body in it. My friend at work said 'so what are you freaking out for...eat your way into the surgery".     Get up to 51% BMI.

Is she kidding me?  41% is bad enough!!!   ugh.

I don't know if you're still interested in the sleeve, but I just heard from my doctor's office that Highmark Blue Shield (my insurance) PPO Blue is covering the surgery now, with the same requirements for other bariatric surgeries.
