Everyone has a different tolerance for pain and how their body chooses to heal. I was sleeved on a Thursday, was back in school the following Monday and fully capable of any type of movement at around 4 weeks. I still had some tenderness at my largest incision point up until around 6 weeks. If you are picking up children often or having to bend/lift a lot, give your employer a 2 week grace period. Explain you will be out for a minimum of 6, but possibly up to 8 if it turns out you are still sore at the 6 week period. You will know how you are doing around the 5th week.

I work in an office - I was off 2 weeks, did work at home 2 weeks, then back to work (with long commute) at the 1 month mark.  No problems but was pretty tired the first 2 - 3 weeks (would wear out quickly).

Since your job is very physical, stay out as long as you can.

Wow. 6 weeks seems like a very long time to me. I was gardening in a week. I felt fine to do much more than my doc said, so I didn't pu**** I was good to go in like 3 days. I was a little gassy but hey the kids will love that. He He.

Good luck with your surgery. I think you will be bored to tears by then. There is no way I would sign up for 8 weeks, unless you just want the time off. Mine was done laparoscopicly though. I assume they are all done that way now but if not, I could take a little longer to heal.

Good luck, try not to worry. Mine and my neighbors were a cake walk.
On my way!!!!!!

I asked for 6 weeks off because i move alot at my job. i ended up going back early and didnt have any pain but i wasnt dealing with any heavy lifting or bending, just alot of walking back and forth and up and down out of my chair. I was extremely tired the last two weeks. no pain or discomfort but i wish i had some spanx or something to hold in my stomach. sometimes the muscles get sore and i feel like some shapewear would help the abdomen feel stronger.

good luck. i hope everything goes ok

I am in my fifth week off right now and can't go back for 8 weeks because of a IVC filter being
in my groin and it has to stay in there for atleast 6 weeks.  I can't go back till they take that out, I
am bored already!  I had a great recovery also from surgery.  If I wasn't getting full pay to sit
home I be complaining, just got to keep myself busy and I'm exercising.

My 2 cents:
Because of your job, I agree with your surgeon. If one of the kids loses composure (trying to be nice - I worked with SED kids for a while) you would easily be in harm's way as far as your incisions and sleeve are concerned. From what I've read, most docs (and mine) release VSGers for full exercise between 6 & 8 weeks out. At that time it will probably be safe for you to work with a child that becomes violently physical.

I'm an RN on a surgical unit, and I had a lifting restriction for six weeks.  Even though I could have asked for help with planned lifting when I had to, there was always the risk that a patient would fall or become unsteady and I'd be in the position of possibly hurting myself in order to help the patient.  I was actually off work closer to eight weeks by the time I was cleared and added back to the schedule.

I know most people are completely fine in a week or two, but I was one of the ones that had a decent amount of discomfort from my internal stitches.  I walked slower, and it would have been hard to do the range of motion and amount of walking that a floor RN does even without the lifting.  I didn't really start to feel like I could have gone back to a full day of that type of wor****il about 4 weeks out.

Truly, there are still days like today even 4+ months out that are so busy I end up not having enough to drink or eat and not haven taken all my vitamins by the time I get home at 8pm.  I was glad I had that initial two months to just focus on my new lifestyle - I think it was extremely beneficial.

Ask for 8 weeks, if you can receive clearance at 6 it is a bonus for your manager! Enjoy your time away and no one will recognize you in 2 months!
