Hi Frisco.  It has always amazed me at how "little" you eat.  My reality is 5 meals/day measured or weighed at 4oz.  Usually 3oz protein with 1oz veggie or just 4oz protein.  I have attempted only four meals per day but I am just too darn hungry.  Started out at 220 and have been around 135 the past 4-5 months.  Kicked up the exercise but haven't been able to eat less.  IDK?

This post is an eye opener for me.
I eat usually 2 oz of dense meat and 1 ounce of other i.e. green beans, potato etc.

I have overeaten a few times, I hate it! So I have learned what signal to watch for because over eating is just one bite too many for me.

I have measured my proteins, like fish, beef and pork and 2 oz is all I can do comfortably.

I see my husband eat 4-6 oz, depending on what it is. But he is also a very large boned man so it appears to be ok for him. He does have restriction and it does keep his eating habits in check.

I guess I tend to be a grazer...A couple chips here, (chips are the enemy!), a low fat cheese stick there. But after spending a few weeks doing a diary, I find I still don't eat more than 800 cal a day...unless I eat chips or drink ****tails (another evil enemy!)

I think I under eat my sleeve without trying because I hate the sensation when my restriction kicks in.
I agree that if the protein is dense, it fills me up and keeps me full for a long time. i tend to not graze when I eat dense proteins.

Tonight for dinner I had one med shrimp, two scallops and two small brussel sprouts. I had prepared more but got full. So I stopped. I used to wait to see if what I ate was going to settle and make some room for more...but that never happened. So I stopped trying some time ago.
Just thinking out loud.

I totally agree with you Frisco!!!  Restriction is about "how little we can eat years out"
I for one, would hope that not in just two years, five...but many, many years, I still have the restriction that the sleeve is meant to give.
The focus is not on the prize of one year out- reaching our goal, but 10+ years still being able to hold our ideal weight.
Thank you for sharing your ideas and helping so many of us on our way, I love and appreciate all your post and most importantly, I learn from them! :)

Frisco, something you said really stuck out to me - (besides the really awesome advise, of course!)-   How in the hell do you FEEL your valve close?  l'm 4 months out, is it too soon for me to feel that?  What does it feel like?  l always undereat, nudged it a bit a couple of times (hated it!), have never foamed or puked. But can you describe the sensation of your valve closing? Thanks!!!

First you have to be able to recognize the feeling of having something in your sleeve.....for instance for me....chicken breast is easy to feel because I know for sure my pyloric is closing and I can feel it sitting in there. Now tuna fish with mayo will not do the same.....for me...not a complete slider food.....but it is going through faster and I don't really feel it sitting in there. Maybe another comparison could be yogurt....I know that doesn't stay in my sleeve very long....

Say you eat chicken.....and 30 minutes later you drink something.....that chicken might still be in there....and you will feel more contents sitting in your sleeve and you know your pyloric is probably only partially open or it is plugged up with chicken still going through.....

So....it's not really feeling your pyloric valve....I guess it would be better described as the ability to feel food sitting in your sleeve...

When eating out and your eating foods your not used to eating and not really eating protein first.....the first thing to do is to portion out your food on your plate before you take one bite.....but than after your first few bites.....it's helpful to be able to recognize how the food is or isn't going down.....

See for me....and I would guess a lot of people....when I feel food in my sleeve....I'm good.....sure I'll eat more to meet my nutritional goals.... but my point is... most people shoot for maximums when you can really be satisfied with less than you think.....

An important post. I used to worry about being able to eat my protein serving; specifically being able to get it down before I got the "stop" signals.  This helps me realize I should just cut those portions and not get there.

Hubby is having issues and Dr, says its too much too fast. I realize as the cook here I need to give smaller portions as he is kind of in the "eat whats on your plate" mode. gotta dial it back for both of us.

As a 2 year plus sleever I am finding in the last few months I can eat more volume than I could. So I am keeing protein servings about the same but increasing vegetables to more than the 1 or two bites I could do before. Its refreshing and I feel better about the health of my diet by adding these.

Anyway, its all good advice and reassuring you are developing confidence that you can do this long term.      Diane

My random ramblings:

I probably use the word "full" wrong, when I talk about how much I eat.  I say that I eat 2-3 ounces of protein, then up to 1/4 cup fruit/veggies (if I'm not full). I don't eat until I'm uncomfortable, or can't eat another bite, or until I feel my food coming up my throat.  I eat until I am no longer hungry, and I get this slight "feeling" under my ribcage.  It's not uncomfortable.  It's what I call "full".

Like you, chicken really "fills me up".  It's probably the most filling thing for me.  Sadly, awesome food like scallops don't leave me full very long.  I had 2.25 ounces of scallops last night, with 1/8 cup quinoa salad, and I was hungry within 2 hours.  But... I don't regret the meal- it was FANTASTIC :)

I probably am not under eating my sleeve, but I don't feel like I've ever pushed it to the max either.

I've noticed that my capicity is more now... 2 ounces + a little fruit/veggie of anything used to satisfy me.  Now I find that sometimes 3 ounces of certain things (like scallops, or shrimp) works for me on some days...
