spent XMas in ICU due to post op internal bleeding & complications
I am a very sick woman right now. My doctor and team are working with me trying to get everything figured out and help me get well - but the bottom line is that my surgery was on Dec. 19th and today I am home staying extremely weak and dealing with new issues every day. I was so prepared! I had read and researched and talked to others and joined a support group and lost weight in advance. Compliant patient? yes! I would get an A plus with extra credit - if it was suggested or recomended I did it. I was in terrific shape prior to surgery. Super ready emotionally and physically with support at home - the works. But even the best laid plans can not gaurantee anything...
VSG performed on 12/19/11. Surgery seemed to go well but when I awoke from anesthesia it was with severe vomiting. I had to be sent for various tests and even during transport was retching my guts out as the poor transporter tried to get me where I needed to be. I had bruising that went from between my breasts to my pubic line and wrapped from my love handles (back of my side) all the way around to the belly button on the left and the right side was only slightly better. The doc wants copies of the pics as it's a first for him. I was vomiting so hard that my husband was literally holding me with a body block on the toilet while I heaved. I was passing out in between bouts.I spent four days in the hospital and was released. I felt weak and ill but the doc assured me I was just on the lower end of normal where I don't feel as well as some. So home I went on the 22nd. Two days later my daughter was calling my surgeon and my husband was shoving me in the car taking me to the ER.
I had developed a fever, was unable to keep liquids down and had spastic liquid diarrhea since being released. My surgeon said to go to the ER that he would meet us there. I argued with my family as I did not want to go to the ER on Christmas eve! Obviously it was an argument I lost and thank God I did or I wouldn't have lived thru it.
When we got to the ER they found me not only with fever but dehydrated and the bruising was very dark. The doc had me sent for more tests which showed the internal bleeding. It had stopped but caused a lot of issues and I was very sick - my HgH was down to 6.5, potassium was ultra low too and I was a mess. They gave me pain meds which started the vomiting again. I was admitted to the ICU and spent Christmas and the next four days there before being moved to a regular room for a day then again being discharged.
Now I am home. And dehydrated with super dark sort of peachy colored urine. I was having all liquid diarrhea since going home so the doc put me on immodium and I had my first BM since pre-op on Saturday. It is a struggle to eat or drink. Water makes me instantly nauseaus. Most food sort of sits and gives a gurgly over filled stuck feeling which I am getting better at managing. The doc is considering putting in a PIC line and having TPL IV given by home health nurses who would start it and it would run for 12 or 24 hours depending. I am very frightened. It's not about losing weight right now - it's about living. I have never been so sick in my life - it is so scary!!
My research gave lots of negative scenarios but none quite like this. Has anyone been thru a similar situation? Any advice, encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

The bruises could be if your vitamin k level was low (is that hgh?) If you leaned over the side if the bed to vomit and your body hit the rails even slightly thats kinda what that sounds like, I've seen patients with hand print bruises from being rolled no one has hurt them it's just because the levels are low and you bruise ridiculously easy, I wonder if the bleed was and accidental cut or from the vomiting?
Wow that is horrendous! I'm so sorry you went through that. I would say get the PIC line. From the people on here who have been through something similar, not being dehydrated makes a HUGE difference in how you feel. I know it might be scary but feeling better has to be a priority. I hope all goes well and you have a much better time of it from here on out.

Wow! Def. a very scary thing! Do they know WHAT caused the internal bleeding? Was it from the surgery?
I hope you get to feeling better really soon! Praying for you!

This is so horrible to hear :( Omg! it makes me so upset.
One thing I noticed was that the pain meds they are giving you keep making you vomit. The morphine they gave me made me horribly ill. Maybe you can request something different. I know those are small potatoes but when I had nausea for the day and a half in the hospital it was very miserable and I know that can't help your dehydration. Just a thought.
They definitely need to find a way to keep you hydrated and stop your vomiting and diarrhea. I would do the PIC line and IV for sure. ANYTHING to get fluids and keep your body nourished.
Did they find the source or reason for the internal bleeding? Do they know WHY you are having issues? They need to find the source of the problem.
I am so sorry for you. What are your surgeons plans?

hope for a quick recovery......
sorry to do this to you but we are all family here and just want to learn from situations to help better future sleevers. I couldn't help but look at your docs profile and I don't see him doing any sleeves. hes done some rnys but does even have the vsg category...............I hope the cause of your problems isn't his lack of experience in this procedure.?????
how many has he done????
please hang in there . you are passe the worst. it will get better you have to believe this. even if you regret this then think about what if you didn't have surgery and years later you had a stroke from your weight or a heart attack then ???? just stay positive and focused and call your doctor without hesitation for any thing that concerns you.
