Have you seen the recent "Fat Trap" article from the New York Times? Just the most recent in a bunch of articles I've read recently suggesting that those of us who have been obese need far less calories to maintain than those of the same weights who were never obese.

Don't know if it's due to loss or if slower metabolisms contributed to our obesity in the first place but evidence suggests if we try to eat the same calories as a naturally skinny person of the same weight we'll gain.

That doesn't mean I think you've gained 6 lbs in this short time - I don't. It's probably fluid and either TOM or sodium related.

It just makes me nervous when folks take RMRs based on averages due to height and weight too seriously. Yours is likely to be lower than average - if you're like me, FAR lower. Your workouts help, but it's something to be aware of.

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22

175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012

The only reason I dont think my RMR is substantially lower is that pre-op, I was eating 1500- 1800 ca/day and losing 2-3 lbs a week (which is almost 1000 cal/deficit a day)

Now, clealy im smaller, so I couldnt still get away with those kinds of numbers, but I dont know...seems weird that my metabolism would be altered that much...

I think I might get it tested in a couple months. Id be curious to find out (i would have done it arleady if it wasnt on the expensive side) i"ll be one sad little camper if it's true!!! (actually not, i'll start body building competitions bc i cant live off 1000 cal for the rest of my life).

Wish there was a way for us to know for sure. My surgeon said he never met two same weight mo people who ate the same.

I always gained when I joined ww, he said that's why he worked down from 1400 to find each persons metabolism. The first month at 318 I did lose at 1400, but then it stopped so I went to 1200. That worked for about 10 pounds and I stalled again. 1100 was my magic number.

So for me, I can gain eating 1400 a day.

I think your about due for a good stall think about how much weight you have lost so far. Your losing faster than me, your body needs a rest period and I think the weight gain is of corse water. Get back to basics and detox for a few days.

Hey !!!

I've been stalled out for over a month now. Shrug... AND I put on 2 pounds, and I don't know where they came from either ! I let it go the month, figuring that I was due for a major stall out. Starting today, I am upping my protein, starting with breakfast, and going to see where that takes me.....

Remember -- this is an ADVENTURE -- you go down one trail, and find that you don't like it, just go back and MAKE a new trail through the jungle. You will eventually find your way....

You ARE doing great. Look where you were a year ago, and where you are NOW....

All the advice is awesome!

You don't say how old you are but during Pre-Menopause (can happen to women age 30 and over and can last many years) metabolic rate DRASTICALLY reduces, calcium absorbsion lowers and TOM patterns totally screwed up. All of which is traced back to a change in hormone levels.

Add to this mix a reduction or elimination of a specific hormone...(gherlin) and you may have times of adjustment.

When in doubt, two things come to mind:
Mix up your intake and/or Output
Go back to basics and start again.

Just my humble thoughts.
good luck

I think it's a combination of something hormonal, and a plain ol' stall.  You work out more intensely than anyone else here, so I don't think it's your calories.  I would say to hold the course and let your body adjust.  You may stall for a while, since you have lost so much, but I don't think your gain is a true weight gain, jus****er shifting around.

If you're really troubled about it, a BMR measurement might be the way to go.

Hang in there, Alison!

Im hoping it might just be some hormonal crap, but a trip to the gyno does not sound like something I want to do anytime soon ughh. Thankfully im still in my 20s and not going to have to deal with aging quite yet

Maybe i'll wake up 10 lbs lighter one day. Im just gonna go with that and wait like kid waiting for Christmas

Thank you all!! Im finally over it and enjoyed the rest of my day!

I don't have anything more to add here but to say keep on keeping on, you're doing great and one way or another the scale will move down again!
