Do you find carbs stall you?

During my losing phase, carbs absolutely slowed or stalled my loss - even when I was within my calorie limitation, amazingly.  Not so much carbs from dairy, legumes, or fruits/veg's, but carbs from various grains and refined sugars.

Yep. I am pretty sure I was still within my calorie limits too. Can you eat them much in maintenance?

I eat more carbs now than I did while losing, but still try to keep them to a minimum.  I'm at about 100-130 gms a day these days, or less, protein is 80-120.  I figure I'll be doing that for the rest of my life.

I find that, like another poster on this thread, if I eat carbs with a protein source (where there's more protein than carb), they don't set up cravings, whereas if I eat them alone they do.  Go figure.  (Stuff I could have learned about myself BEFORE surgery, frankly, if I'd been able to keep from diving face-first into the sugar on a daily basis, LOL!)

I never seemed to have had any issue with carbs - I was fairly consistently running in the 80-100g per day range thru most of the early and mid loss stages and more like 120g later on when I started specifically adding more complex carb for workout endurance purposes - and haven't had any significant stalls along the way, including the dreaded three weeker. Maybe it's a matter of keeping out of the starvation mode and maintaining a higher BMR? My basic philosophy has been to add as much high nutrient density food, after the basic protein requirements, as comfortable capacity and high caloric deficits allowed irrespective that nutrition being tied to a carb or a fat; it just so happens that a lot of nutrient dense foods come with carbs, so I don't mind the lack of lethargy to go along with the better nutrition.

Wow, that's great! Maybe after I am done losing I will track my carbs and see if I can get in to a higher range without regain.

I don't work out a lot right now since I am very busy, so that could make a difference too. I guess if I were burning off the carbs at the gym, maybe I could eat more too. I will have to see sometime how working out effects the number of carbs my body can handle.

Thanks so much for your input!

Some will tell you no but, I believe that for the majority of us, carbs are evil, lol. Seriously, when I keep my net carbs under 50 grams, my weight loss is steady. When I engage in more carbs the weiight loss slows. I guess if I did it long term I would probably have constant stalls.

I also notice that on the days when I had more than 50 net grams of carbs, my appetite for carbs increased and it would take at least 2 to 3 days to get my cravings under control. I notice that those who don't have a low carb program usually lose weight but wind up gaining it back because they continually increase their levels of carbs and bad choices.

Do what works for you and as your surgeon suggests. My NUT says that when counting carbs you count net carbs (your total grams of carbs after subtracting the grams of fiber). I hope this helps.

Yeah, the best success I had before surgery was on a low-carb diet. I think I am carb sensitive for sure.

I think the net carbs thing is right too. Adkins was pretty much what I did before, and that was his thing too. I think counting net is good too because it helps me to get in more fiber and not freak out about it messing me up. He He

Thanks so much for your input!

Because I purposely low carbed it through my losing stage, I never stalled. But, I can state with 100% certainty that carbs cause me to gain. I'm back in the losing saddle now that Tatum has arrived, and I still have 12-14lbs to lose before I get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I don't get the eat a carb, crave a carb thing, but I can eat craploads of carbs. My body doesn't care if it's good or bad carbs, or fiber filled, I know that I won't lose this weight if I do not restrict all carbs again like I did in my losing stage. My body is super carb sensitive, and it sucks.

Congrats on your new baby!!! I am so happy for you. You always sound so in love with your husband. I am so happy for you. I bet you guys are over the moon.

I am sure you will get the weight right back off though. You have done excellent so far. It sounds like you didn't gain too much during your pregnancy. 12-14lbs to lose after wards is pretty good.

Thanks for the advice and I am happy for your new arrival!

Thanks so much! ! !

I gained a whopping 35lbs in the pregnancy. I was HUGE and all belly and that's where all my remaining fat is sitting right now. Plus, my skin is stretched back out after it rebounded really nicely.

The one perk to having stretchy skin post major weight loss =  NO new stretch marks HA
