Nervous...left shoulder aches
Hello...I am a little over 3 weeks out and I am nervous about a weird achiness I have in my left shoulder. I know that this is a symptom of a leak. I can't really call it pain, it just feels like my shoulder muscle is really tense and I need a massage. I've tried excercising, stretching, but it is still there. I have noticed it since last week. It radiates up my neck sometimes and I have a slight headache at times, No fever, slightly elevated heart rate (but that has gone down since I started getting more liquids in), no abdominal pain (except my stiches ache if I sit too long or the wrong way. Also when I stand up too fast I feel like I'm getting a hot flash. Mostly I feel fine, I'm just a worrier and freaking out about getting a leak. I have a follow up appointment with my doc on Thursday. Anyone else experience this?
Shoulder pain can come from any number of reasons. My concern would be if you spike a fever then definately get some medical consult. It's strange as we go through this journey how attuned to our body we become and things we've never noticed before now suddenly worry us.
Hang in there. Everyday will get better. Enjoy the journey we are all on. Merry Christmas!

Not a physician - but my understanding is the shoulder pain is more of a secondary pain, where the primary symptoms would be severe pain, nausea, and potentially vomiting.
I know it's Christmas and all, but pay of the large pay that surgeons receive include being available for potential patient emergenices. He/she shouldn't mind a 2-minute phone call tonight. Or you can play it down, but if you spike a fever like the above poster said, or get gut pain, I'd head off to the ER. Could just be an after effect of the gas pressurization from surgery too, though.

Thank you for your responses. From my understanding too, I would have other symptoms if I had a leak. I'm probably just being a bit paranoid. I'm feeling random little aches in my body since surgery and not sure why..but every one is freaking me out. I probably just slept wrong on it...but I will definitely call my doc if I develop any other symptoms. Thanks!
I haven't had my surgery yet, but FWIW's my manual says the most common pain after surgery (besides the incision) is left shoulder pain, and walking is key to reducing this (something about a common area for gas to accumulate). I don't know though how long after surgery that should be expected. Hopefully some other recent VSG'ers can comment about this as well.
Good luck,
Mel
