Anyone with a Start Weight 350+ Reached BMI <30?
Hi Everyone,
I would like to get an idea of how realistic I am in believing that I can reach a BMI of less than 30 considering that my start weight was 388. So I am looking for responses from VSG'rs who have had such an experience, or from folks who are aware of other's who have.
As of today I am 2 weeks post op and seem to be losing very well, but I know this all slows down after awhile. Just trying to set reasonable expectations as to whether or not my 135 lbs goal is truely acheivable (I'm 5'3").
Thank you! ~Nann

I plan on being under a BMI of 30 here pretty soon - I started at 420 lbs. I'm getting close to 200 lbs lost. I did lose some of it before I had surgery, which was much harder, so I dont see any reason you can't lose the weight with the VSG.
Will it be easy - nope. Those of us who start out at a very high BMI have more challenges to over come when it comes to making our goals. We can't starve ourselves on 600 calories for 6 months and reach goal. I expect that it will take me 2 years from the time I first started losing weight (in July of 2010) to reach my goal weight, but I will do it. It requires me to work hard every single day and stay vigilant about what I am eating and how much. It's tiring, frustrating, a lot of hard work but very rewarding.
You should check out the BMI over 50 forum for more people in the same boat.

There is a vsg maintenance forum. Maybe you can see some of those people's weight loss who have reached goal. I have seen on this forum people who have lost 200, 300, 400 pounds- men and women. So I have no reason to think it is not possible. The key seems to be to remain diligent and not settle.
My numbers are with my signature below. As of today my BMI is 36.7- down from 57 in about 6.5 months. So, I have no reason to believe that it is not possible.
Just keeping working with your tool. Don't ever fight it.
Hi Nann,
I think if you are prepared to work hard, your sleeve will help make your goal quite achievable. I started out at almost the exact weight as you on the day of my surgery. I only managed to get down to 315, and have now gaied back 20lbs. I don't consider myself a VSG success story. I have found that most of the people who post to this forum have been very successful, which leads me to believe that the non-successful people (like me) don't really post here. So my advice to you is to seek out other forums/blogs for people who have undergone VSG or other WLS and have NOT been successful. They may be able to give you some different perspectives and/or tips that will help you avoid making the mistakes that they've made. Obviously you don't want anyone to bring you down, but it might be worth checking out just to get a more realistic view of things. The bottom line is, in my opinion, if you weren't able to control your eating and exercise regularly before your sleeve, you probably won't be able to do so afterwards. And if you don't do these things, you won't be able to reach your goal. If your head hunger gets out of control (like mine has), that's going to be a big problem. It all comes down to self control, commitment and discipline - sleeve or no sleeve.
