Large bruise on lower abdomen, 7 days out from surgery
I had a reaction to the Lovenox shots they gave me after surgery and was bleeding inside my abdominal wall. I had a giant hematoma, and the bruise was eggplant-purple and covered my entire left side, breast to hips, bellybutton to spine. It was the largest bruise I've ever seen, and my whole left side was swollen and painful.
This started within 2 days of surgery, and I had lost so much blood that by Day 3 I couldn't stand up without passing out. I had to go back to the hospital ER on Day 4 and they gave me a transfusion ~ I took 3 units of blood ~ and they admitted me for another 3 days.
I never ran a fever, but my heart raced and pounded, with my pulse shooting up to 130 or more when I stood up. I felt horrible and knew something was very wrong.
If you feel okay and just have a relatively small bruise with a little swelling, it doesn't sound like internal bleeding. Or maybe a little bleeding that already stopped. I think the others are right and it's probably just a local reaction to the Lovenox. But, if you feel bad, are running a fever, or if your heart is racing, please don't ignore it.

Thanks Crystal...sorry you had that experience!!! This bruise is not very large, maybe the size of a tennis ball. I did call my surgeons office and spoke to the nurse who spoke with the surgeon. They agreed that since I don't feel bad and am not running a fever that it should be fine, but to monitor it to make sure it doesn't get larger. So I think it's ok and it is exactly in the place where they administered the lovenox, so I think that may be it....but I will definitely use caution. Thanks for the warning!!
