There is NO Magic 6 Month or 12 month Weight Loss Period!

Nice post and discussion.

I have always been troubled by some vets that decree that a certain newbie 'gets it' and will be a success.  We all have very unique journeys and there is no magic formula that will guarantee results for everyone.

Love the post OM!! You are so right. I have been disgusted by the way some people berate other surgeons and their varied plans. If everyone would work their program, be nice, and not forget that they were heavy at one time, this would be a much better board. It can be very demotivational at times. Way to keep it real!

Very interesting discussion...

I definitely see the value in using the initial time after surgery to re-train yourself into the habits that create long-term success and do everything you can to maximize weight loss.   I think everyone does.

I think the vets are urging people to maximize the first six months based on their own experience that this was the easiest period of time for them, and there is nothing wrong with that.  I appreciate that they want people to succeed.  The flip side of course is that people beyond that first six months end up wondering if they are doomed.

Another problem is created when people throw out goals that were given to them, and others take that and apply it to themselves.  Is there a study that shows that if you don't reach 50% of EWL by three months or 80% by six months that you have less likelihood of reaching goal?  If there is, I'd like to read it.

I do believe it is best to lose the weight as fast as you can.  I have done just about everything I can to maxmize my weight loss post-VSG...I will not hit 50% EWL (that would be 70 lbs) at the three month mark.  It is hard not to feel discouraged by that - even though logically I know I should not be discouraged at all.  Should I expect 20 lbs + weight loss each month for three months after surgery? I haven't lost 5 lbs/wk since week three.  Does that mean I've screwed up weeks four through 10???  Maybe I haven't taken full advantage of my honeymoon period!!!  80% at six months would be 116 lbs...again almost 20 lbs/month...we are talking about nearly 10% of my entire body weight each month.  Hmm.  But still, it is really hard to get those "benchmarks" out of my head.

Bottom line, when we talk about maximizing the first six months, I think we should emphasize behaviors and habits, rather than reaching arbitrary weight loss numbers that may or may not be applicable to each person.

I had my surgery 4 months ago and have been an abysmal loser despite being the poster child for intake carb consumption, exercise, you name it i do it.  I've been completely compliant.  the most depressing part of it it the idea that this was happening during the best time of the honeymoon period.  in 3 months i had lost 16lbs.  well anyhow under medical advice i upped my cals lowered my exercise and started to lose, not at a good clip but better.  in my 4th month i lost 12lbs.

the most debilitating part of this was the idea that the highest weight loss would be in the beginning and then it would taper off, this is not a fallacy, this is in fact what most vsg'ers experience.  Most is not all. Eventually i found a poster Mom4Jazz who said she started losing better in month 4 and it was like a lifeline, so i felt there was hope.

in terms of the honeymoon period i have to believe in it.  80% of posters lose a ton of weight right off the bat and then it slows down.  it's not a mirage..  The problem with public forums is that the majority rules just because they are the majority.  it's like we talk about leaks as being a possibility but when you have 10 posters a year posting about their leaks and 500 leak free, you tend to forget about the leaks or at least believe they are an anomaly.  For sure not losing quickly right after vsg is some sort of anomaly and disheartening but a reality for a number of us. But then again the honeymoon period is a reality for most who get vsg.

Im so pleased to hear your losing better, I think this is why my surgeon sets percentages so if someone is struggling to lose weight they can tweak things, rather than just leave someone floundering.  and start looking for answers...

Thanks Mini,

It's actually been fine.  The not eating part is the easiest, who would have ever known?  Not losing is what it is but since i upped my numbers things are going better.  I figure i will do this and keep my eye on it and then tweak it again.  Who knew it would ever be hard to up calories.  It's upside down world around here.

But OM, the people on the interwebs say it there is a magic time period.  It must be so.
