Prenatal vitamins for hairloss...safe?
VSG on 10/09/12
Curious about the same thing. My hair was at its very best when pregnant and I never took pre natal vitamins. Three very healthy pregnancies, and babies and mega hair loss after each birth.
My post op plan is to get a super duper sexy stylish wig or two and wait out the hair loss if any... Everyone says it grows back.

I am currently pregnant, and I don't bother with a prenatal. I take all the same vitamins I did before I got pregnant. Reasons:
I did some research into the differences between standard multivitamins and prenatals. The primary differences are simply that prenatals tend to have more folic acid, calcium, and iron. Since I already take both calcium and iron separately, and my folate was unmeasurably high on my labs, I didn't bother wasting my money on prenatals.
Most women ee their hair become amazing during pregnancy, but it's not because the prenatals are better for hair than regular vitamins - it's because most women weren't taking ANY supplements prior to the prenatals.
I very highly doubt prenatals will help with hair loss. Google "telogen effluvium," which is the true cause of most hair loss post-WLS (also the primary cause of hair loss after giving birth). It has nothing to do with vitamins or minerals when you're talking about the hair loss that occurs around 2-6 months post-op. Taking good vitamins will just help to ensure the new hair that grows in is healthy, but it won't prevent the current hair from falling out.

Prenatals making your hair beautiful is a common misconception. Your hair is beautiful and your nails grow quickly and strong during pregnancy because your hormone levels are much higher during pregnancy than when not pregnant. It's not the vitamins. Your hair falls out after you have the baby due to the drastic hormone drop (telogen effluvium). You can take prenatals all day, but they are pretty much the same as regular multivitamins and have nothing to do with what people see during pregnancy. Some people will swear that I'm wrong but I spent 2 years researching hair loss and being consumed by it and I can guarantee that this is true. Take a multivitamin that has what YOU need in it and then take BIOTIN. That is a separate supplement recommended for hairloss and they even sell it labeled as "for hair and nails."
My surgeon recommended prenatal vitamins post surgery, but it has had no impact on the hair loss. It's just going to happen. Biotin does not help with hair loss either. It will help with regrowth, but not with the loss. I've been dealing with hair loss for 15 years. I've been to 'specialist' after 'specialist'. They know nothing about it. I've been wearing a hairpiece (before that a wig) for about 5 years while I watch my hair get thinner and thinner. I'm 4 months post op and the loss started about 3 weeks ago. It has gotten so thin that I may not be able to wear my hairpiece much longer because there isn't much to clip it onto. I will probably be sporting a wig soon. :( My nails, on the other hand, are stronger than they've ever been. Why that is, I don't know. But I took my acrylics off right after surgery because they were growing so fast that I didn't have time to go get them filled in every week. They are stronger and grow faster than they ever have.

I currently take 2 flintstone complete vitamins. However the taste, and aftertaste is really getting to me. So I bought some prenatals. Just wondering if I take one or two a day. Do you know how many to take? The only other meds I take is thyroid, ppi and clariten. Thanks for your help! 50 y/o female 5'6" HW 283 current 160 goal 150
