Mine was only in for 5 days...From what I see on the boards, not all have the drain.  However it was not that bad.  Its out before you know it.

I had a drain after surgery.  It was removed at my 1 week check in.  The tube is held in by a couple of stiches at the surface.  There was about a foot or so of tubing on the outside and a squeezable ball a bit smaller than a tennis ball at the end.  3 times a day it had to be :"stripped" and emptied.  Then you squeeze the ball thing and seal it again to draw fluid out.  This keeps your abdominal cavity drier which leads to faster healing.  I was VERY happy to have it out.  Afterwards, you have to keep a dressing on the drain hole for a while, but it healed up very fast. Its called a Jackson Pratt drain if you want to look it up on google.

I had a drain for 5 days as I was a band revision to a sleeve.  Not sure what the norm is for most patients.  The drain was really not that bad although felt a bit strange to walk around with it.

I go on Thursday and was told "if" I have one it will be for 48 hours, but the Dr. is not using it on everyone these days.

I didn't have a drain. My doctor seems to use them onhis bypass patients more than his sleeve patients.
