Stupid ??? ~ do Protein drinks count as liquid or food???
I am a pretty intelligent woman and have been reading tons, researching online and meeting with the support group. I can't seem to get a final answer on wether protein drinks (for example the BE or Atkins type) count as part of my liquid intake or food? And the reason I ask is because I love dessert and thought a sweet protein shake would be a great dessert that fits in with my program. But should I drink it immediately following a very light dinner - or wait 30 minutes? And if I wait 30 minutes - should I want another 30 minutes after drinking the protein shake before drinking water? Can you all help me out?
Thanks!!

I count my protein shakes toward both my protein goal and my liquids goal. BUT, I do not drink them after a meal. I always wait 45-60 minutes to drink anything after eating food.

From what I can tell Protien Drinks are considered a liquid, so it would be something you can use during the liquid phase of your diet (as long as you don't add anything like frozen fruit). However, I believe protein drinks are supposed to be used as a meal, not necessarily as a dessert. But if you wanted to use a protein shake for dinner as a last meal of the day kind of thing, I think that works better. I'm still pre-op so I may be wrong, but this is the impression I've gotten.
Hope it helps! I'm sure some vets will get on and let you know for sure :)

I wouldn't drink right after a meal because it could cause the food you ate to funnel through your sleeve causing you to be hungry later. I am not able to count a protein shake as part of my fluids. Also, my nut doesn't want me to have anymore protein shakes after I start foods tomorrow. I think everyone is a little different. Check w/your Dr. or nut to see what plan you are suppose to follow. Have a blessed one!
