Studies have debunked the idea that yo-yoing damages your RMR.. Yes, while you are on a very low cal diet, your metabolism will slow slightly, but it recovers once you up the calories again.. but yo-yoing has been shown to negatively effect bone density.. that's a bummer.

It's a jumping off point.. but I think there are several factors.. Our bodies want to store fat. We frequently overestimate what normally skinny folks eat on a daily basis.. studies have shown they are very good at regulating their intake unconsciously over a period of time. Eat big at some meals, eat more sparingly at others.. averaged over a week, I'd imagine they eat far fewer Kcals than we would like to assume. Our metabolisms are generally slightly slower than a normie as well after being MO (not true for all), plus a calorie isn't a calorie. It is not a fallacy that carbs do create a hormonal fluctuation that stimulates storage vs burning. Add to that the fact that Kcals estimated as burned during exercise are generally very far off the mark, we want to assume we burn 400 cals during that workout, but the science says otherwise! It adds up fast in my mind at least.

Per the Mifflin equation, my goal weight RMR comes to 1415 (corrected as I forgot to minus 161).. at 155lbs 5'7" and 38 years old. I am guesstimating my range is likely in the 1400ish mark (leaving this in, as I made a math error.. my actual RMR calorie needs is almost spot on 1400!)  Per your goal stats, your "calculated" requirement is 1581 (corrected for math error).

Edit, for anyone that wants to do the math.. I forgot one step, so the numbers I originally posted were higher. The formula requires converting to metric, but is fairly accurate and worth doing the math!

Males: 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (y) + 5 and for females:10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (y) - 161

I think the operative word we're missing here is "normal".

I do not consider myself normal by any stretch of the imagination. My body is not normal, my metabolism is probably not normal.

And, I have "normal" naturally thin friends, and we all eat about the same amounts, and none of us are "workout" junkies. We are active, but no formal real exercise.

I've had this discussion with one of my really close gf's and she has "fat days" she has a bounce on the scale, she gets a muffin top too. So, I'm right there with her, but I eat a couple hundred less calories than her on a daily average.

Age, activity level, medical conditions, medications etc etc all play roles into this. I just don't think I can ever consider myself normal when it comes to food, calories, protein, and carbs. I couldn't eat half the carbs most of my normal, naturally skinny ***** girlfriends eat without gaining weight, but they seem to be able to do it.

I don't know the science behind it, and honestly, I don't care to understand, I just know I gotta keep my numbers in check or I'll gain weight.

If your surgeon's office doesn't do metabolic testing, i would  pay $60 or so to have it done.  It's worthwhile, anyway. They can tell pretty accurately how much you need to eat to maintain via tests for Resting Metabolic Rate and/or body composition.   My program includes testing and meeting with an Exercise Physiologist.  My RMR and body Fat were checked pre-op, at 3 months, 6 months, and it will be checked again at a year.  Celebration Hospital also has a BodPod, and I'm going in for a comprehensive composition test, there, this month on my own dime.

I'm 5'3" and pretty active.  My RMR is about 1800 Calories a day, and I burn probably another 400 through regular exercise.  I've had body composition testing done, but I want the BodPod  test because it's more accurate. My goal weight is 124, but based on my last composition test that's below 20% body fat which is pretty tough for a 44 yo woman to hit.  I don't want to kill myself trying to hit an unattainable goal but at the same time I don't want to rely on relatively inaccurate test to make that decision, either.

My surgeon's office barely does follow up care

I will definitely do the RMR test, probably closer to a year out. I'm not worried about maintenance at the minute - cant put the cart before the horse.
