How many calories at maintenace?

I was emailing my nutritionist about how much I should be eating, and she told me I could be eating (based on my description of my activity levels) between 9-1100 cal right now.

But then she said I should plan on eating around 1200cal/day once i hit maintenance?

She's got to be kidding me right? In one breath, shes saying I could be eating 1100 cal right now, but then when I lose another 90 lbs, I'll be eating 1200?? I get that ill burn fewer calories as a 'normal' size person, but that seems like a pretty low number for maintenance. I'm 5'10 and in a super ideal world I'd like to end up around 170 or so.

How did you determine your maintenance range?  Trial and error?  Adding 100 at a time until you felt comfortable?  A calculation?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Yah........

Just up cals little by little......When I hit 148lbs. my weight loss pretty much was at a stand still....

And Doc C said "Stop" hold that weight for a year......So.....I stopped....but it was kinda already stopped.......so maintaining was not a giant move.....

It's trial and error and I'm sure varies by the person and their activity levels. I added 100-200 calories/day and adjusted it weekly until I stopped losing. I am generally around 1500 +/- a few and have maintained for 4.5 months. I occasionally go up a little in calories, and my weight will go up also. 1500 seems to be the right number for me.

I'm 5'2" maintenance weight of 125-130lbs with zero formal workout/exercise routin, but I am extremely active, and I maintain my weight on around 1200-1400 calories a day.

1200 I would hang closer to the 125lbs, up to 1400-1500 calories closer to my high end 130lbs.

Just wondering - what do "normal" thin people eat in a day? Are they all eating around 1200 calories/day and those stupid calculators that are supposed to tell you how many calories you need based on body weight are just full of it? Or do "normal" thin people just have a higher metabolism or do they exercise a lot or what?

I just can't wrap my head around why post-WLS people seem to have to stay on such low calories diets the rest of their lives.

1200 is my surgeons maintenance goal range for me.. from there, it will be a plus and minus game to determine where I land.

Seriously, how is this possible!? All my skinny friends who don't work out eat about 2000 cal/day. It just seems so weird that I ate about 1800 cal/day pre-op for a year and dropped a lot of weight. Even thinking about eating 1200 for life seems so extreme, but I guess ill just wait and see how it goes.

I'm wondering if the lower calorie intake for WLS people to simply maintain is because our metabolisms are a bit messed up from the up down, yoyo dieting and then super lo-cal eating because of WLS. I know that at my goal weight of 166 I'm "supposed to" be able to eat between 2200 and 2300 calories per day. My nut said, "No way." It'll be more like 1600 a day. Weird to me because I'm still pre op and lose weight on 1600 calories a day. I have a good friend who is 5'6", had the RnY three years ago and gains weight eating more than 1200 calories a day - but she doesn't move at all.
I guess it's a wait and see!
