Screw the scale

So, I was 1 lb away from hitting my 150 lb loss mark, and the scale decides to do some funky **** - literally. The scale went up 5-6 lbs and it's not going away I thought it was sodium - so Ive been watching it carefully, drinking TONs of water, but to no avail. WHATEVER. Its not TOM so im at a total loss.

I went this morning and did my first spin class at the gym and loved it. I was so scared I wouldn't be able to do it and the instructor made me sit in the front so I couldn't bolt out the back door!! Not only did i not quit, I had a solid workout, and it felt good.

Take that you damn scale.

I am a little frustrated though - Im eating 8-900 cal, im burning between 600-900 cal at the gym 4-5 times a week, and I should be melting away not going up. I just refuse to let it have any control over me whatsoever. Im thinking it might be time to see some kind of sports nutritionalist, but im not sure where to find one with any knowledge of bariatric patients. I'd imagine that if i were "normal" - i should be eating close to 2500 cal/day with my workouts, if not more, but that's not gonna happen.

Bummer!!  That stinks!  I sometimes feel like I should be losing faster and I wonder what I can do/change to make that happen.  I probably will not hit a double-digit loss again this month.  Maybe we need to eat more calories??  Especially for you since you are working out more than me??  Maybe I should just stick to the program and not think about it (yeah right)??

There are parts of this that are a complete mystery to me.  Let us know what you come up with when you figure this out.

Step away from the scale! LOL There are other ways to judge success after WLS besides the scale. Don't worry...it sounds like you are working hard to get to your goal. Are you checking your measurements?

I've heard that when you exercise, the body does hold onto water, I think it goes to the muscles or tissues that are tearing/building up. I forget exactly what it was, but it made sense when I read it. It was posted on here somewhere. As long as you are sticking with your program, you will do fine. It's possible you should increase your food a little if you are working out that much. Have you asked your doctor or nutritionist?

I should throw the scale away - im not really obsessed with it. It bothers me a little but im definitely much more into tracking my success in other ways. I've made huge leaps in my fitness levels in the last couple weeks so thats why i wont freak out about the scale, but its still hard to see that.

I think Ill send an email to my nutritionist and see what she says but when I saw her last, she went over a little food guide and it seemed like a little run of the mill "how to a healthy balanced diet" so im not holding out much hope that she can deviate from that

It could be that you are working out and muscle weighs more than fat.  That could be it.  I find myself obsessing with the scale.  The scale can be our enemy. But congrats on your 149lbs weight loss!!

When you exercise, you tear muscle.  Even though it sounds bad, that's what you want to happen!  Then water rushes to where the muscle is torn.  Given the pretty substantial exercise routine you have, I have a feeling it really is water weight, and it will come off - eventually!  Our bodies are never, ever, ever on our schedule.

I know - and i totally have 100% faith im on the right track. It just sucks. Im the biggest proponet of not using the scale to measure success, but even sometimes I get a little frustrated.

I keep my workout log in my car - whenever I get frustrated I flip through it to see the progress I've made. And I can definitely see when Ive ramped it up and probably looking at extra water weight.

Life times of dieting and "weight loss" expectations are hard to get out of my mind.

I did that a month ago when I went from 6-700 to 8-900 and I had a big loss followed by a 2 week stall. didn't bother me much, but i know I should eat a little bit more. Im not gonna stress about it right now unless those extra lbs don't go away in a week or so.

Maybe ill up my calories in a couple weeks when my paranoia goes away
