Results of my Upper GI

I got a call from my doctor to tell me that the results confirm that I have GERD. It doesn't really tell me anything I didn't already know, except that my constipation issues will make my reflux worse when I "get backed" up.

I don't know if GERD is the cause of all my stomach discomfort, but if prilosic is not controlling it, why haven't they given me a different prescription? Is there a certain amount of time I should wait before demanding a different prescription?

Im hoping I don't have to live with constipation forever, or the reflux. But i have been feeling a bit better, so its a start.

I have a CT scan scheduled but not sure if its gonna be all that helpful.

I have had GERD for over 12 years now. I started out with Prilosec, then went on to Prevacid. It has been controlled except when I forget to take my daily dose (30mg), for over 10 years now. I know how much GERD can make one miserable. I lived with it for years thinking the burn was normal, then once it was controlled I was amazed. I hope they are able to find the right medication and dose to give you some relief.

I don't know why they wouldn't have tried another med by now.. you generally know within a few weeks to a month at the most if a particular PPI is going to work for you or not, if not- switch to another. It sounds like you have docs that you need to get a little insistent with.. be pushy!~

As far as the constipation, can I ask what you're already doing or trying? For me, the one change I made that I cannot stress enough, that fixed my issue completely was switching calcium supplements to ones that have added magnesium in them. I have not needed any other help from stool softeners or laxatives since.. and they worked so well, I needed to go out and get some straight cal citrate powder to do a half & half with as I was going too often because of the magnesium! Vitalady's Tender Cal/Mg/D3.. you need to take 6-9a day of the capsules to get the full elemental calcium dose.. I take 4 caps (2 doses) plus a dose of straight powder in my morning coffee.

Ill try the magnesium. I've just been doing fiber, water, stool softeners and exercise. Coffee has been my laxative for the last couple weeks which is probably why I've been feeling a little better. But I cant do coffee forever lol.

My doc wants me off red meats because they cause constipation, but i cant get rid of it completely. Chicken and turkey are boring after a while.

Give Vitalady's Tender calcium capsules a try.. I'd hate to give up my red meat! If they end up working too well, you can fiddle with the doses easy enough.

For straight constipation, I take 3 things: Magnesium oxide, colace and a probiotic. Without these each day, there's no way I'm able to go every couple of days. No amount of fiber or Miralax or whatnot would fix it...

Obviously medications will be different here in Australia than there, but I take Zoton tablets for GORD which I assume is the same as GERD lol.
Zoton have come out with their fast tabs which are chewable and disolveable in the mouth. Hoping to be on them when I get my op done coz they will be easier to cope with than having to try to swallow extra tabs in the early stage. I found a US based link and I must say I get mine for only $28 so glad I live here lol

Prevacid has quite a bit of naproxen in it, so maybe that is why they didn't change you to that?  I obviously don't know the answer, but it may be something you want to explore with your doc.

Hi Alison,

Sorry about yoru Gerd. I had Gerd too before surgery and they fixed my hiatal hernia and I am ok since.  When I eat too much it acts up.  I dont take anything anymore.  I just wonder about your
situation, and i agree with you, why havent they changed your prescription yet?

Did they detect a hiatal hernia or anything else?  something sounds not right.  I am assuming your volume eating is within your food plan, and just wondering why yoru sour tummy and gerd?

I am glad your getting tests... I hope you get to the bottom of it soon....really....

Constipation comes from high protein diet and then certain things we eat.
That is why I eat more veggies and started 4 1/2 months out and I am like loving
how I eliminate.  High fiber diet will help and I am glad to hear you are taking fiber.
Are you taking Psyllium?  Traders Joes is the cheapest and works the best.  Its better than
metamucil, which is over priced and doesnt have as much in it as trader joes.  maybe you want to try it and see how you feel.

anyhow......  keep  us posted and i hope your CT scan goes well.  Or find something so you can get to the bottom of it.

Something I just learned that can cause reflux among other issues from VSG.

First my surgeon says he is very aggressive in fixing hialtal hernias.

Second is some surgeons who may be less experienced may not shape the sleeve correctly.

The sleeve needs to be shaped with food flow in mind. Some sleeves end up to tight right in the middle of the curve. In some sleeves this may be the only point were it is actually tight with the bougie (sizing tool). What happens it is funnel shaped and food can slow down or get pinched off in the middle and has a slow release.

So food and acids.will back up.......

Maybe you could have them look for that during the C T scan.

Also twists and strictures can have the same effect.

These are all the extremes.
