Trying new things

Im definitely a believer in living my life and doing everything I want to do.

I workout a lot, but I got bored with my normal walk/jog/bike workouts, so I started doing some group exercise class. One thing I've always wanted to try is cardio kickboxing, but for the last year and a half, I've been too embarrassed to do it.

But, tonight, I sucked it up and went to class. I was really embarrassed but held my head up and acted like i belonged there. Unfortunately, I only made it through 40 mins of the 60 min class, before I had to bow out, but I'm glad I at least tried it. Every single muscle in my body hurts now!!!!

I need to do these things to build my confidence - i enjoy them and im not going to let myself be intimidated and sit on the side line. It's not easy, but definitely worth it (please please let me be saying that in the morning lol)

Hey Alison---
I agree with you about trying new things. I spend allot of the time in the pool doing laps, water aerobics and now Aqua Zumba (that's new and fun). Need some changes (am adding some strength training)

Question---have you tried a spinning class? I stood at the door and watched for awhile as they went through canyons and mountains, etc.  Looked great.  Looked really tough. They were even standing and riding---

Have you tried it? How was it???

Spinning is next at the top of my list of things I want to do, but Im too scared to try it because of a nagging knee issue I have. I can do about 30 mins on the stationary bike before my knee starts objecting, so I haven't ventured into spin class. I will one day become a spin class addict though

Fun, fun and more fun----plus a good workout. Much like water aerobics but with a beat and more dancey!  I think most of us would like to be in a Zumba class (since it's so popular right now) but my back and legs wouldn't allow it yet. So this is the next best thing.

However, I must say----my hips just don't quite move that way!!!

I did spinning during my last weight loss kick.  It was fun but my ass hurt like mad from those seats.  I loved it.  Our teacher was great and the group of people we had was fun too.  We had everyone from the size 2 model to the 65+ knee replacement, to me obese.  If you couldn't go as fast as the instructor you just did as much as you could.  She said it burned in the range of 600+ calories for the hour and you are DRENCHED when it is done.

After my first class I had to get off the bike during the cool down because my butt hurt so bad.  The instructor said that was completely normal and to try to take 2 classes a week to build up "callusses" (sp?) so it would hurt.  It took me about 3 weeks for my butt to stop being so painful.  You'd think with all the padding it would hurt so much!

*You've reminded me how much I enjoyed it.  I just checked and my base fitness center has a spinning class on Sat. morning.  I'm going to start this week.

I use to work with a girl that did kick boxing and she said it kicked her butt. She was always sore the next day at work after a class of this. It is a good form of exercise and it is good that you backed out after 40 mins. You should see if they have a class of 30 mins or so, you would still benefit from that much. Don't over do it and don't hurt yourself, hurting yourself will only cause set backs in your exercise routine.

Thanks Im pretty good at judging how much my body can tolerate - I think after a few classes I might be able to do the whole class, but for now, I need to be able to walk down the stairs out of the gym

I just started Zumba... I am so uncoordinated!  But like you, I held my head high and just tried to keep moving.  I didn't fall and I didn't pass out, so I think I did ok.
