diet/caff free soda

Aside from the fact that im shocked that you have a NUT who actually approved this, you need to work on your addictions.

Those addictions - we all had/have them. You CANNOT have surgery and keep your same addictions and expect results. You need to be able to find a way to deal with your cravings other than putting junk in your body (and yes, diet caff free soda is JUNK). If you do not change your habits, you will not get the results you want. This WLS is not the easy way out- it takes a lot of hard work, pain and maybe some tears to get through it. Its much easier to cut the soda out cold turkey now than in a couple months or years from now.

When ever you get these cravings - ask yourself:

- Have I had my 64 oz of WATER (or propel, gatorade, etc)
- How do I feel?Am i stressed, bored, etc? Keep a blog
- Might not apply now, but keep track of your phyisical signs of hunger. It might be hunger, or just being tired, light headed, etc.

In my opinion, once you have a substantial part of your stomach removed, eating for pleasure (unless your frisco lol) needs to be a thing of the past. We absolutely need to eat to live - and only put nutritious food/drinks in our body simply because we have such a small stomach.

Good luck to you and I hope you will take the advice of this board and not your CRAZY NUT (haha no pun intended).

At the risk of sounding rude and exasperated, I have to admit this post rubs me the wrong way!! First of all, why on earth would you drink flat soda, what is the point? Second, why after having almost 85% of your stomach amputated, would you allow a substance that can corrode like battery acid into a healing wound!!??! What are you thinking? You were given the opportunity to CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!! Why would you indulge in pre-op behaviors? You are setting yourself up. Plain and simple. If you have an "addiction" to something, why jeopardize adding it back into your life? You are lying to yourself by telling yourself "its only in moderation". I suspect I will see you later on posting about how you are stalling and not losing, etc.

This hacks me off for two reasons: 1. I truly care about people on this site and want the best outcome for all surgical patients. I hate to someone sabotage themselves with foolish thought processes. and 2. because I am doing everything right; eating under 800 cals a day, 80-90 g of protein, under 20 carbs, in ketosis, and working out with a trainer. I am busting my ass and my weight hasn't changed for over a week.

You will stall eventually, its natural and why egg it on with doing things I think you know better of.

Good luck to you and I wish you the vest success. Like Frisco said: use your common sense.

I think that if a lot is being unused and thrown out, dont force yourself upon it! I feel like I went so much to get to where I am, I would not want to jepordize that with a few drinks of FLAT diet pop. BUT to each their own!!! I would def be calling the surgeon and asking! My Dr said no pop ever!!!! Because if it is an addiction your trying to over come (which I have an addiction to pop) it is only going to make you want it that much more!!! Best of wishes!

I'm not here to beat you up...honestly. But I have to ask...why in the hell would you replace the healthy water you could be drinking with chemical filled soda?? I don't care what your Nut says...telling you drinking flat soda at a week out is just insanity on her part!

There are real scientific studies out that show soda is bad for a person losing weight. Soda fixes a sweet craving...but..it goes to the brain as a sweet taste, but doesn't actually satisfy your craving for sugar...so the brain craves more sugar...and so you see the slippery slope this can start. I just read about the study and I hope I'm explaining it right. If someone can find that study, please post it!

It's not that soda is so bad for you, it's that soda sets you up to crave carbs, why shoot yourself in the foot??

Have I tried a Diet Coke since surgery...yep. I was over 7 months out and I can count on one hand the few sips I've had.

Please make healthy choices now, so you don't get in the habit of excusing bad choices later.

Well I can't comment on your dietician's recommendations as I have no such training but I will say that my surgeon and dietician would have recommended against this.

But whether this will hurt you or not at a few days out is not the point so much as the fact that you are continuing one of your pre weight loss surgery habits that is generally considered to be not healthy. Now is the time to cut all ties with those pre op bad habits that got us all into trouble. If you can cut out carbs, keep to protein, keep calories low and all these other things, you can cut the diet soda too. Some study somewhere shows a correlation with diet soda and weight gain - not sure I understand why. But why not use this once in a lifetime time to cut these old habits. I did, it wasn't easy but now in maintenance phase I just automatically decline suggary carby foods and its become second nature and pretty easy. I really stuck to the rules I was given and it paid off in the long run.

So think about this in terms of 3 or 5 years down the road. Yeah some flat soda might not hurt physically but think about your habits and addictions and consider whether its best to give this one up now while its easier to do.  Regardless, good luck with your weight loss journey.  Diane

Someone should report your NUT to the medical board.  Ridiculous!  That's all I have to say about that!

A little story about me... feel free to ignore...

For my entire adult life I drank diet soda.  A lot of diet soda (20-80 oz a day).  During that time, I was ALWAYS hungry.  All the time.  I'd often say "I'm more hungry that a normal person.

About 5 years ago, I heard that diet soda messes up some people's appetites.  I decided to quit soda cold turkey.  It was hard to do, but after 3-4 months, I no longer craved it so much.  After about a year I realized- I'm not hungry all the time anymore!  My overall hunger decreased.

I am SO thankful to have given up soda!

Your nutritionist is an idiot.  Your husband is smart and looking out for you.  Listen to him and the countless others on here that have told you to:

POUR THE DAMN SODA OUT AND DON'T BUY ANYMORE.  IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

I woudl question your NUTs credentials.  And I would talk to your surgeon about what she told you.  I'm 20 months out and still don't drink soda and never will.

I was addicted to Diet Mt. Dew.  Cut it cold turkey and haven't missed it yet.  And within a week of cutting it out, my knee pain went away.  I hadn't even had surgery yet or lost any weight!  The acid and caffeine are VERY hard on your stomach.  I won't eat/drink anything that I think will compromise my very small stomach and I certainly would never have done something so early out.  I don't know if the acid in the soda would have any affect on  your staple line, but I can't help but think that your raw, unhealed stomach would be negatively affected by it.

My concern for you is also that how well will you stick to the program if you cannot do this?  You (like so many of us) are probably also addicted to food.  Don't use that as an excuse to eat junk.  Addictions are hard to kick.  But if you want to be successful, you have to fight those demons.  If you can't fight them now, you'll most likely fail at the food battle too.  At 20 months out, I still battle those demons on a daily basis.  I make the right choices 90% of the time.  I'm at goal, so I can do this and maintain.  While in the losing stages, I made the right choices 100% of the time.

For your own health and well being, think about what the majority of the responses said to you.  Don't allow the 1 or 2 that said it's ok to sway you in the wrong direction.  Note that those folks are too far out either.  Those of us who are at goal and maintaining know what we're talking about.

Soda is poison.  To a full stomach and to a stomach that has been cut by 85%.   Your NUT is NUTS!

Some people might not support my WLS decision.
Those people remind me of slinkys. Not good for much but it would would bring a smile to my face if someone pushed them down the stairs.
