HELP! Dr. Experience??
Well someone on OH told me that my Dr's. partner has done about 70 Sleeve's which has me wondering how many my doc has done in the same office!?
I work in a Dialysis Clinic and my head doc and my PCP doc has told me that they are the best of the best around here and that I should use them, soooo what do I do? Should I look or find out which one has done more and go with that doc?? Now I'm just wondering.
I read on here somewhere that you should go to a doc that has done 400 sleeves or more.... lol so that's far fetch
Any input would be great!
Thanks Jennifer

Mine does about 38 a year (for the last 3 years) another 20 or so RNY(a year) and 2 bands (he tries to talk people out of them). But that's not his main job. He's a GI surgeon for the US Navy so he helps fix the issues when our soldiers come back hurt from OIF and OEF.

Statistically speaking, a surgeon with 300+ sleeves has less complications.
Technique speaking since VSG is not a standardized procedure, a surgeon's technique obviously gets better with more practice. You'll see that some people are left with big sleeves because that technique just isn't there due to lack of experience. Bigger sleeves equals more regain. That's a big concern long term for all of us, but it's a bigger deal if you're left with a bigger stomach. Bougie size(the tool they use to "measure" out the remaining stomach tissue) doesn't make a hill of beans if the surgeon cuts too far away from the pylorus or esophagus, or too close to either of those as well.
The main concern is complications obviously, but long term, you want a surgeon who has enough proven experience to show good long term stats on sleeve patients.

I think my doc had done around 50 sleeves when he did mine.
But here's the thing, he had done many more RNY's, stomach cancer surgeries, and many much more complicated surgeries than the VSG.
VSG is pretty straight forward and not all that complicated, much less complicated than an RNY. But the VSG is newer so most doctors havent done as many of those. As long as your surgeon has done some and is an experienced bariatric/stomach surgeon, in my opinion, thats what matters.
You need to be comfortable with your surgeon though, whether that is one that has done 70 or 700, thats your choice.
