thyroid question
Hi,
My thyroid is very low they just decreased my pills to get in the normal range.. Could that be effecting my weight stalls? I seem to loose 5 lbs than stall for weeks.. I thought maybe when I had the surgery I would loose weight quicker but if my throid is not working I guess that would hinder my weight loss any thoughts would be great..

If your thyroid hormone (TSH) is low (and they are decreasing your pills) it actually means you are hyPERthyroid... meaning your thyroid is overactive.
Is it possible you have hashimoto's? (autoimmune thyroid disease). I have it, weight loss can be notoriously difficult, and I stall alot, but I'm losing all the same. It also means I can fluxuate between being hyper- and hypo- thyroid, making medicine adjustments a total pain.

part of the reason i even got this surgery was because i went to an endocrinologist for my thyroid. My TSH was a 76!!!! (normal range is 0.5-4.5) i saw 3 doctors who were FLOORED at how bad my thyroid was. they referred me to this specialist. because i have PCOS and HyPOthyroidism (i also have hashimotos disease which is basically an uncontrolled thyroid for a long amount of time w/ lots of symptoms****pt gaining weight uncontrollably 2-5 lbs a week and regardless of dieting, id still gain. they gave me 1-2 years to live if i didnt take off this weight, and well WLS was my last option. i have been on the HIGHEST dose of SYNTHROID that they make, for 2 months, to bring my TSH down. i had blood drawn today and go for the results on monday. but even with my thyroid being THAT bad, ive still lost 37lbs in 3 weeks. We all have stalls, and they're usually related to the amount of protein we're getting in and how many calories/sugar we're consuming. If you're in a stall for more than a week, go back to basics. water, walk, water, walk, soups etc. are you counting your fats, calories, sugars, proteins a day? if you have hyPERthyroidism, then it should be somewhat HELPING your weight loss because this means your thyroid is overactive which will make you LOSE weight. My dr said before we got my thyroid straightened out, it would at some point be HYPERthyroid too, which he said wont hurt me, itll actually help me. again, pay close attention to what you're doing OR NOT doing. good luck :-)
This sounds like the story of my LIFE! I actually still had LOTS of symptoms on synthroid (which is only T-4... only 1 thyroid hormone), but switched to armour thyroid (which has them all), and for the first time in YEARS my numbers are stable! WOOT WOOT!
It's weight dependant, though, so endocrinologist says I will most likely need to go down on my dose. (Which is good, it means there will be room to move up if I have another flare).
If anyone else is curious about it (it's a common issue, and OFTEN un/misdiagnosed... I went undiagnosed for nearly 12 years), here's a link about hashimoto's/thyroid disease/treatment...

I have Hashimotos too, and am taking the highest dose of Synthroid, but would like to try to switch to armor. Smardee, what symptoms did you have on Synthroid and how is armor different? Did you have any trouble making the switch? Is the cost the same for armor as Synthroid? Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!
On synthroid I felt tired ALL. THE. TIME. My hair was falling out, my skin awful, I had no energy, and was depressed/lifeless. (This was even after my TSH was more in the "normal" range). I still had breakthrough symptoms).
Once I switched to armour, within a week it was like a light came on. I felt like my "old" self again... hard to explain, but almost like something inside of me had "woken up".
I had NO trouble making the switch, but I really had to push my regular Dr. to let me try it. The cost for me is about the same... I have insurance, and my synthroid co-pay was around $10-$15. My armour is between $8-$11 depending on the pharmacy.
I can't recommend it highly enough. If you haven't read the link I posted earlier in this thread, check it out.
Thanks! Michelle.
