Gas Pains - apparently they are not necessary!

Well I have debated posting this as I'm sure someone is going to have something to say about it.  But it is frustrating to hear of so many people having terrible gas pains when apparently it can be prevented.  My surgeon told me that I wouldn't have any gas pains because he would at the end of surgery suck all the air back out of my tummy.  Then inflate me and deflate me a second time.  Sure enough I had zero gas pains.  No I'm guessing that this adds time and therefore extra costs to the surgery and that is potentially why other surgeons are not doing it.  But for pre-ops - why not ask your surgeon if this is something they can do and avoid these horrible pains?

I might add that I am from New Zealand and my surgeon has studied with some of the big names in bariatrics.  AndI paid for my surgery myself and it was very expensive.

Kia Ora! I didn't have any pain that I could associate with gas following my surgery...I'm wondering if my surgeon had a similar technique.

From what I understand, surgeons generally do try to get as much of the air out as they can as they know it causes discomfort.. I had no gas pain at all, while a smaller person who went under the same day as I did, had pains. I believe much of it is individual.

I had gas pains from He!!. It was the worst pain ever. I have had to previous c-sections, and it was 10x the pain. I started walking 2 hours post op, because I knew the possibility. Even with my constant walking I was so lucky to get the gas pain from hell. Finally the next night, I was able to "air out". I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. After that I was good as gold. So I do think it is individualized. I truly believe all surgeons attempt to get as much air out as possible.

My gas pains were hell. Worst pains I ever experienced in my life. Glad you didn't have to suffer.

I had zero gas pains as well. My surgeon said it helps they way he positions the patient on the table. I think it would be impossible to assume any surgeon can successfully say they got all the gas out as it is invisable.

i haven't had my VSG yet, but i have had liproscopic gall bladder removal and two c-sections.  with my gall bladder i had a lot of pain, from the gas being in my stomach during surgery - not after .... the pulled/stretched muscles were a biotch!  with my first c-section i didn't have any gas pain, with my second one i had the usual pain in the collar bone pain.

who knows why i had such different pain???  or lack thereof???  not me lol!

I was expecting gas pain but I did not have any either. I guess my Dr. did get it all out or I did not get much put in to begin with.
