I cannot even believe that 1 week ago today I was sleeved?!?! Going into surgery I felt amazing peace, calmness, and confidence, Since surgery I am doing pretty well, except for the few fears that want to rear there ugly heads!?!? I totally overdid it on sat. and paid for it with pain, and an extreme bout of nausea, thankfully it passed and did not vomit... this scares me, the whole damage to the suture site and all. Working hard at getting all my protein and fluids in. Question for you seasoned vets with history of diabetes. My surgeon took me off my metformin postop and my sugars are still consisttently 120-150 range, no matter when I check them? Did yours get to normal and when after surgery was it? I know with RNY this clears right away? I did research this sleeve/rny and diabetes and found both surgeries to be successful. Just wanting some support instead of needlessly worrying?

I dont think you have anything to worry about.  I had my VSG on August 11, 2011.  Before surgery my fasting blood sugar was 149 now it is between 90 - 125.  I think yours will continue to get  better. Just keep checking it every morning.  My VSG Dr  said to let my  diabetic doctor know if it was over 180.  Keep up the good work.

While in the hospital my blood sugars were in the 160's.  Once I got home and transitioned to the full liquids they came down to the 90-110 range by my 1 week point.  I was taking Actos and Metformin but stopped taking them the day before surgery and was given 2 units of insulin in the hospital.

My surgeon told me that with he has seen a mix from VSG patients, some like me went down immediately and some it took a few weeks.  The thing that makes RNY a quicker adjustment is the intestinal re-route that we do not have.

My pre-op blood sugars were around 140 fasting and up to 210 after eating.  It never mattered what meds I was on or how low my A1C was my fasting blood sugar was always elevated.  I just had my first A1C test this morning since surgery so I am anxious to get the results.  Based on my testing I am thinking it should be around 5.8-6.1.

I'm 10 days out and haven't had any diabetes meds since the day before surgery.  I test my sugar in the morning and right after I eat (which is about 2 hours after ate last) and I have not gone over 124 on any of them.  My dr said to take the Metformin if it goes over 160 and it hasn't!  One of my most expensive rx was a diabetes medication and I am hoping that I am done with that!!

My readings have come down to normal over a period of about three months.

A couple of years ago my untreated A1c was over 14.  With 86 units of Lantus and 2000mg of metformin I brought it down to just under 7.  Before surgery my fasting glucose (with meds) was usually in the 130-140 range.   It was often 200+ post meals.

My surgeon said to expect a slow resolution over 3-6 months.  She dropped me to 15 units of insulin immediately after surgery.  Within two to three weeks after surgery, I was off insulin and only taking 500mg of metformin.  Fasting blood sugars still in the 120+ range.  Within the past month though (I'm three months out this week), my readings have slowly but consistently dropped to around 100 and this past week I haven't seen one over 93.  Stopped the metformin altogether last week.  Got my A1c results a few days ago and I'm now at 5.6 (maybe it was 5.4).  Anyway, I'm apparently no longer diabetic.

Hope it works out as well for you.
