What an incredibly sad story!  I truly feel for her family.  I had experience with death after WLS.  It wasn't as sudden as Stephanie's but hard none the less.  My Dad had gatric bypass surgery 4 years ago.  Surgery was a success but had developed an ileus due to anesthesia (basically a bowel obstruction caused by his colon/intestines being paralyzed after anesthesia and not waking back up like normal).  Because of his ileus, things could not pass through his system causing a back up and ultimately leaks throughout his bypass site.  He stayed in ICU in a medically induced coma for the next 4 months while they cleaned out all the sepsis and infections in his body.  He regained consciousness and was rehabbed and had lost close to 200 lbs. in that time frame.  We were relieved that he had survived and didn't take another day with him for granted...  6 months after that time he needed to go back in for additional surgery to remove a massive hernia and to remove excess skin.  Well, apparently another ileus formed, things backed up and nothing could to be done to save him...  His body had been through so much to recover.  To see my Dad take his last breath in this world is something I will never forget...  So, when I decided that I wanted to have WLS, I was terrified to tell my family after all they had been through with my Dad.  Needless to say, everyone was so supportive and stood by me as I had my VSG surgery nearly 2 months ago.  Sure I was scared of surgery, but I knew this was my decision and have not regretted it one bit.  Surgery of any kind can be dangerous.  I knew going into it that having the same genes that I could too get an ileus but I had an awesome staff of professional people that looked out after me.  I had the same surgeon my Dad used, since he was an awesome man.  He told me that he almost quit practicing after what happened to my Dad (which was a fluke thing) but thank goodness he didn't.  He has helped hundreds of people get their lives back and I am so thankful for him.  Enough of me talking... Sending prayers to Stephanie's family!

What a nightmare. It looks like both of these "surgeons" are quacks! How on earth do they keep their licenses??

I wonder if surgeons have to be licensed separately in each state they work in? If so, I can't imagine how it could be legal to be hopping around like this!

Thanks for posting this Frisco...like so many others have said, please keep us posted on the update to her autopsy.

I've spent the past hour or so reading different threads about the surgeons involved and what a sweet, wonderful, young person she was and the whole thing is really just sooooo sad.  My heart goes out to her family and her boyfriend, who must be overwhelmed with grief.

As you said, it's a very "good time to remind everyone to reasearch and study".
