I disagree with my NUT, please weigh in with your opinion

Went to a support group meeting last night and my nutritionist who is affiliated with the hospital's bariatric program repeated something I have heard her say..

Nutritionist to group- " We have no need for carbohydrates anymore. Protein only. Carbohydrates are how we got here. And fruit is no longer a reasonable snack"..

Ok so yes, our body does need carbs to function, that is a fact. I am guessing she means straight carbs ie: rice, bread, pasta, crackers, etc..
We all know we get some forms of carbs from veggies, milk, etc..

I dunno I just felt like I did this so I could eat somewhat normally, always putting protein first but still being able to have small amounts of carbs..
I also occassionally snack on cherries, maybe 7-8 once a week..I know they have sugar..but I cannot see this being an unreasonable choice..They have nutrients, fiber, vitamins..

I know there are alot of people that are die hard low carbers, and I watch my carbs but dont do it with super strict rules for myself..

Is expecting to eat somewhat normally, including the occasional fruit and carb unreasonable and setting myself up for failure in the future?

Did your NUT have the same stance? Interested to get other's opinions/experiences!!!

 My nut group does not advocate a no-carb approach.  Protein comes first, but they say that healthy carbs are vital.  They do not look kindly on any white flour products, but whole grains are in (along with veggies & small amounts of fruite).

Ditto! And I too did the surgery to eat smaller, normal portions.

I'm down to my goal weight and lost 75lbs in 8 months most days with my carb intake well over my protein.  I could care less how many carbs i'm getting, as long as I exercise!

Sassy, I am a nutritionist and I can tell you that yours is right on.  You are lucky that you have a nutritionist that actually can think outside of the mainstream propaganda.Your body truly has no need for carbs and there are plenty of groups of people who live their whole lives eating NONE and thriving (like the reindeer herding nomads of Russia).  Here's an article on the myth:

what confuses me is that in all the science classes I have taken for pre-veterinary medicine which are the same for pre-med like anatomy and phys, biology, micro, etc..they have all stressed the biological need for each nutrient- protein, fat, and carb..

i will check out the link..
though i know i will never 100% shun carbs, i dont want to completely block out certain foods and i dont want to feel guilty about it..i am interested to see this research..

its crazy how some nuts have one opinion and others dont agree..though i see the same with different vets i work with having different stances of medical practices..and even animal nutrition..

Sassy, I feed a totally raw diet to my Ragdolls. I know them's fightin' words to a lot of vets.

Too bad medical science doesn't fully understand nutrition. I think we'd all be better off. As it is, it seems we have to pick our way thru all the information to find what works or makes sence for us. Sure makes it hard

I read the article and have a question, so will the body pull the fat to turn to glucose from what you eat for the day or from your fat stores?

Both of my nutritionists want you to get your protein in, over your carbs (obviously) but they haven't ruled them out completely. The reason that I chose this surgery is so that I can live some what of a normal life, and if I want to eat pasta one night, I would be allowed to do that, or if I want to have a bite of a dessert, I could do that. My doctors also carry the train of thought - in reality, you will eat carbs, and fruit, and protein and vegetables.. it's all okay in moderation. I know a lot of people on this website are low or no carb, but that is not a lifestyle that I would be able to live - fat or skinny.
